Considering whether the Houston Astros could be a good fit for free agent pitcher Michael King.
The Houston Astros have some key choices to make when it comes to building up this roster for the 2026 season, but one of the biggest ones is how to improve this pitching rotation from the last season where it was quite inconsistent all year long.
Talking about the pitching, Fox Sports actually listed the Astros as a good free agent fit for San Diego Padres pitcher Michael King if he decides to leave the Padres this offseason. Two other destinations mentioned were the Athletics and the Chicago White Sox.
As far as why King would be a great fit, he just brings a lot more consistency and reliability as a starting pitcher which is indicated by his overall performance during the 2026 season as well as in the postseason.
Starting with King's regular-season stats from this past season, he had an overall record of 12-10 while starting and playing in 32 games and pitching 185 innings. During those innings, King allowed 148 hits, 68 runs, walked 70 batters, struck out 159 batters, and posted a WHIP of 1.18 as well as an ERA of 3.21.
When looking at King's stats, it is clear that he played quite well in the regular season and at times was dominant, which is exactly what the Astros need.
Transitioning to the postseason, King was incredible as he played in three games while starting in two of those games, recorded a record of 1-0, and pitched 14 innings. In those innings, King allowed five hits, one run, walked five batters, struck out 15 batters, and recorded a WHIP of 0.71 and an ERA of 0.64.
Simply put, King was dominant in the 2026 postseason, and when the Padres needed him to perform, he did just that.
Getting back to the Astros, they cannot say the same about their starting pitchers over the course of the regular season or the postseason.
When it comes to Houston's starting pitchers, their best three included Peter Lambert, Hunter Brown, and Hayden Wesneski. Additionally, the Astros also had Tatsuya Imai, Mike Burrows, and Cristian Javier, but all of them struggled, which put the Astros in tough positions a lot of the time.
That said, a player like King provides the Astros with a player who can be relied upon to be a shutdown pitcher a lot of the time, which can then allow the rest of the rotation to be a lot more confident in their ability and put a lot less pressure on them, which could be a huge boost for the Astros in 2027 if they can sign King.
So, as the Astros move through this free agency, it will be interesting to see what they do about their pitching rotation and whether or not they sign King or someone similar, because what they do as far as the changes on the mound this offseason will have a major impact on how Houston performs in 2027.
