The Houston Astros are in a very interesting position heading into the 2027 season as they had an early playoff exit and have a lot of changes that need to be made this offseason, with one of those changes being final as they have hired Randy Flores to be the next GM.

With that said, one thing that is very uncertain when it comes to 2027 is the direction that the franchise will take with its approach, but it does appear that owner Jim Crane does have an idea as to how he wants the Astros to approach next year.

According to beat reporter Brian McTaggart, Crane said, "I don't think it's going to be a complete teardown at all. We've got to make some good decisions and make some changes and solidify a better lineup and better team than we had last year."

Based on this quote from Crane, it does seem like his goal is to be competitive through prioritizing key decisions and making the correct moves to improve the team from where it was in 2026.

While that may seem like a simple proposition, it is not that simple, as with Flores taking over as the general manager, he and Crane have to get on the same page when it comes to hiring the next manager, but also roster moves, and they have to do all of that in a sped-up timeline, as there is a potential lockout looming in early December.

For a GM every move is critical and there will always be attention on him, but with Flores being the general manager role for the first time in his career, it is going to be really interesting to see how he and Crane can work together before the possible lockout does start.

To this point, Flores has already made a few moves, with one of the more recent moves being the decision to part ways with Jake Meyers, who has been with the Astros for quite a decade.

This decision to move on from Meyers may have been a tough one, but there will be many more of these tough decisions, especially with the key free agents that Houston has, including Bryan Abreu, Steven Okert, Daulton Varsho, and a few others.

Getting back to the focus on the 2027, the most important move the Flores and Crane have to get on the same page with is who the next manager will be as that will likely impact which players the Astros target because each manager does typically have their own philosophy on personnel and how they manage substitutions.

On the topic of the next Astros manager, the fact that Crane wants the Astros to remain competitive means it will likely be someone who has had previous success with someone like Brad Ausmus being a potential option.

As the Astros move forward, it will be interesting to see the types of moves Flores can make to help Houston achieve the goal that Crane has for the Astros, which is to be competitive in 2027 rather than tearing it all down.
