With the regular season winding down, Houston Astros star hitter Yordan Alvarez could be in danger of losing out on his Triple Crown opportunity.
The Houston Astros are in a tight race for the AL West with the Texas Rangers for the top spot, as both teams are tied with an overall record of 77-77, so it does put some pressure on both teams to perform well down the stretch.
Additionally, Astros star hitter Yordan Alvarez has some pressure on him as he has been chasing the Triple Crown in the AL as he plays for Houston, but at this point, it appears his opportunity to win the Triple Crown may be slipping away.
So, let's take at the performance from Alvarez when it comes to batting average, RBIs, and home runs to see if he can come back or if he will fall short of attaining the Triple Crown.
Starting with batting average, Alvarez does have a lead in the American League with a batting average of .312, while Tampa Bay Rays second baseman Chandler Simpson is just behind with a batting average of .308.
With just about a week to go in the regular season, Alvarez must stay consistent and maintain his lead in batting average, otherwise it is very possible for Simpson to pass him.
Next, looking at RBIs, Alvarez has a total of 99 RBIs for the season, but that ranks him No. 2 in the AL, as Baltimore Orioles first baseman Pete Alonso has 105 RBIs this year, which ranks him No. 1 in the AL, and is quite the deficit for Alvarez to overcome with not a ton of games left to play.
Based on Alvarez trailing by six RBIs, he has to get a lot more aggressive when he is at the plate and nearly every time there is a bad pitch he has to take advantage which could give him an opportunity to catch up, but it will not be easy.
Lastly, in the home run category Alvarez is facing a deficit as well as he 40 home runs on the season ranking No. 2 in the AL while Tampa Bay Rays third baseman Junior Caminero has 41 home runs for the season which ranks him No. 1 in the AL.
While one home run may not seem like a lot, with the limited time that Alvarez has to make the comeback as well as the opposing pitchers knowing what he is trying to do, it will be a tough feat for Alvarez to accomplish, especially because Caminero can still add more home runs to his own resume.
With eight games left to go, Alvarez needs to maintain his lead over Simpson in batting average, catch up to Alonso in RBIs, and catch up to Caminero in home runs, and if Alvarez can do all that, he would win the Triple Crown and could quite possibly be one of the more impressive finishes to a regular season from the plate in recent history.
