After staying healthy for 158 games, Houston’s slugger captured the batting title and led the majors in OPS, joining elite company with a historic 40-homer campaign.

Yordan Alvarez played 48 games in 2025. This year he played 158, and the Houston Astros finally got a full, healthy season from their best hitter. The awards are already piling up with the numbers behind them particularly impressive.

The Slash Line Speaks for Itself

Alvarez hit .316 with a .432 on-base percentage and a .601 slugging percentage, good for a 1.033 OPS. For casual fans, he got a hit nearly once every three at-bats, reached base more than four times out of every 10 trips and did serious damage when he made contact.

He finished with 179 hits, 105 runs and 106 RBI in 567 at-bats.

A Batting Title With Real Power

That .316 won the AL batting title and was the best mark in baseball. Alvarez is just the third Astro to win one, joining Jose Altuve and Yuli Gurriel. He’s also only the third player since 1970 to win the AL batting title with 40 or more homers. The other two are Aaron Judge and Miguel Cabrera. Pretty good company.

He Owned the Leaderboard

Per MLB.com, Alvarez led the majors in on-base percentage, slugging, OPS and walks. He also led the AL in total bases with 341 and extra-base hits with 77, plus a 190 OPS-plus. His 42 home runs set a career high and tied for second in the AL. He finished second in both RBI and hits, and added 34 doubles. Then there was June- Alvarez hit three grand slams that month, tying the Houston record for a single season. The last one, on June 30 against Minnesota, was the seventh of his career and tied Alex Bregman, Carlos Lee and Altuve for the franchise mark.

Pitchers Wanted No Part of Him

His 33 intentional walks led all of baseball and set a club record, and he drew 109 walks against 120 strikeouts- the most feared hitter in the sport, and I don’t think it’s close. It also creates a real problem for 2027. If nobody behind him makes teams pay, pitchers will keep handing him first base.

Best Hitter or Best Player

The Athletic wrote that Alvarez “may be the best hitter in the game right now,” while naming Pete Crow-Armstrong the best all-around player because of his defense. That’s fair. Crow-Armstrong saves runs in center field. Alvarez created them at a level nobody else matched- the hardware backs it up. He took home Players Choice AL Outstanding Player and AL Comeback Player, as Aiden covered in his Players Choice Awards breakdown, and he also made the Bleacher Report All-MLB team.

What It Means for 2027

Alvarez is 29, and after 158 games, his health is no longer the story. The AL MVP is announced Nov. 12, and he’s the favorite. After that, the club’s next general manager has to build around this bat. Get him real protection, and 2026 might not be his ceiling.
