There is no doubt that this offseason will have a lot of change for the Houston Astros, but one thing that is for certain is that designated hitter Yordan Alvarez had an incredible 2026 campaign, and as a result of that, he will receive lots of recognition.

Speaking of that recognition, Alvarez has already received some great recognition as he was named to the Bleacher Report All-MLB team roster on October 27, 2026, as a unanimous selection, which was a great honor as there were only nine players who were selected unanimously.

In addition to the recognition from Bleacher Report, Alvarez has also received some recognition from his peers as the MLBPA (Major League Baseball Players Association) announced their selections for the Players Choice Awards, and Alvarez won two of those awards, which included AL Most Outstanding Player and AL Comeback Player of the Year.

While getting recognition for impressive statistics is awesome, gaining the respect of peers is even more meaningful, and that is exactly what Alvarez was able to do in 2026 with his performance, and that was demonstrated with his two awards from the MLBPA Players' Choice Awards.

To give some context, the Players Choice Awards are only voted on by active MLB players in a process where they can individually vote for their peers for a variety of awards and with that said, it is clear that Alvarez has been able to more than perform well on the field, he has gained the respect of his peers.

Now, diving into why Alvarez was selected for both awards, he had a very impressive campaign as he nearly won the Triple Crown, but also was able to bounce back after suffering hand and ankle injuries throughout the 2025 season, which limited him to playing in just 48 games.

As far as Alvarez's stats go, some of his most impressive were his batting average which was a .316 (led the MLB and helped him clinch the batting average title in the AL), 106 RBIs (No. 2 in the AL), and 42 home runs (No. 2 in the AL).

With where Alvarez finished in batting average, RBIs, and home runs he was nearly able to win the Triple Crown, and while he was unable to secure the Triple Crown, his ability to have that kind of production from the plate shows the kind of player he is.

Additionally, for Alvarez to bounce back and play as he did in 2026 after playing only 48 games in 2025 speaks to his character and resiliency, as well as the fact that he wants to help set a standard for the Astros to aim very high in hopes of once again being a premier contender in the American League.

With the recognition that Alvarez has received to this point in the offseason it is clear that Alvarez has gained the respect of writers as well as his peers  but he may even earn more recognition as he could very well take home AL MVP when it is announced on November 12th.

Regardless of whether or not Alvarez does win AL MVP, it is evident that he is a force in the MLB and that he is more than a great player, he is a great person and a great teammate, which will do him well throughout the rest of his career.
