Athletics Lose Opener In Heartbreak

Shea Langeliers was the man of the night for the Athletics, hitting two home runs against the Toronto Blue Jays at Rogers Centre in Toronto.

Too bad it didn't help as the Blue Jays rallied in the bottom of the ninth to pick up a 3-2 victory on Friday night.

Langeliers hit his first home run in the fourth inning, then tied the game in the top of the ninth with a solo shot.

It tied things up at 2-2, but the Blue Jays had the final say.

With two outs in the ninth and the Athletics' Justin Sterner on the mound, Ernie Clement doubled and Kazuma Okamoto moved to third base.

Then, the Blue Jays' Andrés Giménez connected on a game-winning single to right. Okamoto scored, setting off a wild celebration after the comeback victory. 

It was a tough loss for the Athletics, but they did put up a fight. 

Athletics starter Luis Severino worked five innings, allowing three hits and two runs (both earned), walking three, and struck out three.

Blue Jay starter Kevin Gausman was electric over six innings. Gausman allowed just one hit, Langelier's solo homer, and one earned run. He struck out 11 Athletics in the outing, picking up his first win. Blue Jays reliever Jeff Hoffman earned his first save.

The Athletics and Blue Jays go at it again on Saturday at Rogers Centre.
