The Toronto Blue Jays will turn to 41-year-old Max Scherzer on Saturday night in Game 7 of the World Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Scherzer, who previously pitched for the Dodgers, will try to prevent them from winning back-to-back titles. He'll also be looking to help the Jays win their first title since 1993.
And he'll make some unique history in the effort, with Sarah Langs of MLB.com noting that he'll be the oldest pitcher to ever start a World Series winner-take-all game.
Furthermore, researcher Jessica Brand points out that Scherzer will be the second-oldest pitcher to take the mound in any playoff winner-take-all game, younger than only Roger Clemens in the 2004 National League Championship Series.
While Scherzer has certainly lost a bit off his fastball at this point in his career, he's got the resume to have manager John Schneider's belief in him. He's pitched in 32 career playoff games and owns an 8-8 record with a 3.82 ERA. He's also got an ERA of 3.80 in four World Series starts, and he was an integral part of the Washington Nationals 2019 title run.
All in all, Scherzer is one of the best right-handed pitchers of the last 50 years. He's 221-117 with a 3.22 career ERA. He's also an eight-time All-Star, a three-time Cy Young winner and a two-time World Series champion (also Rangers, 2023).
He has 3,489 career strikeouts in the regular season.
As of this posting, the Dodgers have not announced a starting pitcher for the matchup, but you know that all hands are on deck for the matchup.
Tyler Glasnow threw three pitches in relief in Game 6 and could be an option as the starter. Shohei Ohtani, who started Game 4, could also see some time. Perhaps even Clayton Kershaw, who has pitched to only one batter in this series, could get some action.
For Toronto, they have a full bullpen beyond Scherzer, but we could also see rookie Trey Yesavage, who dominated the Dodgers in Game 5. Everybody but Kevin Gausman, who started on Friday, would seem to be an option.
