The versatile player has been battling ankle discomfort, but like multiple members of the Jays, he's on the mend.

While not there yet, the Toronto Blue Jays are slowly but surely starting to get healthier.

Baseball's most injured team since spring training, Toronto enters play on Thursday at 7-10 overall, but they appear to be on the verge of getting rookie starter Trey Yesavage back, and veteran starter Jose Berrios shouldn't be far behind.

On the offensive side of things, the Jays provided positive injury updates on George Springer and Addison Barger on Thursday afternoon.

Per Arden Zwelling of Sportsnet.

Addison Barger (ankle) has resumed baseball activity at Blue Jays complex in Florida. He played catch the last two days and is expected to begin swinging on Friday or Saturday.

Goal is for Barger to resume running by Tuesday or Wednesday and go from there.

It's still unclear when Barger will be back, but if he's able to run by the middle of next week, it stands to reason that he could be back in the fold by next weekend.

The injury has been the latest in a terrible start for Barger, who is just 1-for-19 to begin the campaign. A breakout star from last season's playoff run, Barger had 21 homers in 2025 and was looking to take the next step this year and be more consistent. His playing time has been more consistent in the wake of Bo Bichette's departure and Anthony Santander's injury, but his results have not matched yet.

Once the injury is behind him, the hope is that he can start fresh again and get going.

He was a sixth-round pick of the Blue Jays in 2018 out of the Florida high school ranks.

What will his return mean?

It likely means that Barger will return to the starting lineup in right field. That also means that there will be less playing time (presumably), for Nathan Lukes, who is out to a historically slow start. He's hitting just .065 through his first 13 games.

Daulton Varsho and Jesus Sanchez figure to continue to see fairly regular playing time, especially in Varsho's case.

Up next

The Blue Jays and Brewers will finish out the series on Thursday afternoon at 1:40 p.m. ET. Left-hander Patrick Corbin will make his second start of the season while Brandon Sproat pitches for Milwaukee.

Sproat was acquired this offseason in a deal with the New York Mets. Corbin could be making his final start if Yesavage is ready to come back.
