Congratulations are in order for Toronto Blue Jays slugger Kazuma Okamoto, who tied his countryman Shohei Ohtani in baseball history with his home run against the San Diego Padres on Friday night.

Now with 22 home runs on the season, Okamoto is tied with Ohtani for the first home runs by a Japanese-born rookie in major league history. Ohtani had 22 for the Los Angeles Angels in 2018. He accomplished that in 104 games.

Provided Okamoto stays healthy for the rest of the season, he's assured to set the record.

Okamoto and Ohtani were teammates for Japan in both the 2023 and 2026 World Baseball Classics. The duo helped Japan win the title in 2023 when they beat the United States in a memorable final.

In addition to his home run totals, the 30-year-old Okamoto is hitting .235 with a .315 on-base percentage. He's got 62 RBIs as well.

Signed to a four-year deal this past offseason, Okamoto has come to the majors as advertised. He had six seasons of 30 or more homers in Japan and has been the impact bat that the Blue Jays were looking for when they signed him. His production has also helped cover up for the struggles of Vladimir Guerrero Jr., the departure of Bo Bichette, and the injuries that the team has suffered to Addison Barger and Anthony Santander.

He was a borderline choice for the All-Star Game, but ultimately will not be going to Philadelphia for the Midsummer Classic, which is being played on Tuesday night.

Dylan Cease, Ernie Clement and Louis Varland will represent the Jays in the game, with Cease serving as a candidate to earn the start for the American League.

The Jays will wrap up the first half of the season on Sunday when they take on the Padres again at 4:10 p.m. ET.

Right-hander Kevin Gausman will take the mound for Toronto while German Marquez pitches for San Diego.

Gausman is just 4-8 with a 4.32 ERA while Marquez is 4-2 with a 5.02.

The MLB Futures Game will take place at 12 p.m. ET on Sunday. Two Blue Jays' players (Nolan Perry and JoJo Parker) are set to play. The game will take place at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia as part of All-Star Week.

Sunday will also see the conclusion of the MLB Draft, which began on Saturday. The Blue Jays will make several selections from Rounds 5-20 as they look to infuse more talent into the farm system.
