On Thursday afternoon, Toronto Blue Jays general manager Ross Atkins issued a proclamation at the team's end-of-year press conference, saying that the Jays would 'be in his market,' this offseason.
He's referring to infielder Bo Bichette, who is headed for free agency for the first time. Toronto issued Bichette a qualifying offer later on Thursday afternoon, but that's just a formality. He'll decline and then be free to sign with any team.
You can see Atkins's full comments in the video player above. Bichette has said that he wants to return to Toronto, but now he'll have the opportunity to hear from all interested teams, and there should be plenty.
On the positive side, Bichette is an excellent hitter. He hit .311 this past season with 18 homers and 94 RBIs, and he's a lifetime .294 stick. He's led the American League in hits twice in seven years and will make a good anchor in the middle of any order.
Furthermore, he's only 27 years old, making him one of the younger players to hit free agency this year - or any year.
And finally, Bichette showed the ability to play second base in the World Series. Even though he wasn't fully healthy because of a left knee issue, he handled the position suitably. Some teams will undoubtedly want to move him to second or third, and he showed the ability to adapt.
The only negative? Bichette is not seen as a good shortstop defensively. While the versatility will help in some ways, the shortstop issue could hamper him with some teams.
The Bichette speculation has run the full gamut already this offseason. Some outlets have predicted eight-year deals, others seven. The money has been at $189 million. It's been at $240 million.
Then, ESPN's Kiley McDaniel put out his predictions on Thursday and ticketed Bichette for just five years and $130 million. So, really, anything can happen.
Anyone who needs an offensive-minded infielder. The New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox could be fits, as could the Seattle Mariners, just to name a few.
But remember, Bichette has said he wants to be back in a Jays uniform. And after a Game 7 loss against the Los Angeles Dodgers in the World Series, there is unfinished business.
