The Jays lost Frank Hermann to the Yankees over the weekend, and have now lost David Bell as well.
Just days after losing Frank Hermann to the New York Yankees, the Toronto Blue Jays have lost another member of the front office, with Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reporting that David Bell has stepped down from his position.
As noted by Shi Davidi of Sportsnet, Bell was the VP of baseball operations and the assistant general manager. He oversaw the player development and physical & mental performance departments the past two years and advised on strategy and player acquisitions.
Bell hasn't indicated what he'll do next, but said that he wanted to step back and re-assess where he could make the greatest impact on and off the field. He complimented the Blue Jays for how they run things.
You can never tell just how big an impact singular members of the front office have on a team's success, but it's fair to note that Bell helped the Blue Jays get to the World Series in 2025 and that you like to keep staffs that had success in place. Any disruption to the status quo is never fun.
About David Bell as a player
Bell, who has lived a lifetime in baseball as the son of Buddy Bell, spent 12 years in the big leagues with Cleveland, the St. Louis Cardinals, the Seattle Mariners, San Francisco Giants, Philadelphia Phillies and Milwaukee Brewers. Part of the Mariners team that won 116 games in 2001, he was a career .257 hitter with 123 homers and 589 RBIs. A solid defender, he played mostly third base.
He played in the playoffs three times, including in the ALCS twice with Seattle and the World Series with the Giants in 2002. He hit .304 in that series as they lost to the Los Angeles Angels.
About Bell as a manager
Bell served as the manager of the Cincinnati Reds for six years (2019-24), but he only reached the playoffs once, in the COVID 2020 season. He was 409-456 in his career, though he did register three winning seasons out of those six.
He was let go after the 2024 season and the Reds went onto hire Terry Francona, who took them back to the playoffs where they were beaten by the World Champion Los Angeles Dodgers.

The Blue Jays will go through free agency for the next month until the possible lockout, and the general managers meetings take place Nov. 9-12 in Las Vegas.
