John Schneider had positive comments on Daulton Varsho and Connor Seabold was designated for assignment on Wednesday.
The Toronto Blue Jays injury troubles have taken a positive turn this week.
Catcher Alejandro Kirk is nearing his return and starting pitchers Dylan Cease and Max Scherzer have each returned to the rotation this week.
Even with that trio nearing a complete clean bill of health, there are still some injury troubles and roster moves the Blue Jays are attempting to sort out.
Toronto outfielder Daulton Varsho is missing a fifth-straight game Wednesday due to wrist discomfort. He exited a game against the Baltimore Orioles on Friday with the injury.
Varsho has been considered day-to-day with the wrist injury since and X-rays came back negative for a potential break or fracture.
MRIs, which would show potential inflammation, also came back negative.
According to comments made by Blue Jays manager John Schneider, shared on "X" via Sportsnet columnist Shi Davidi, Varsho is making "progress every day" with his wrist injury and will be able to hit in the team's game against the Philadelphia Phillies on Wednesday "if needed." The game will begin at 7:07 p.m. ET at Rogers Centre in Toronto.
Varsho has slashed .256/.331/.408 with a .739 OPS in 64 games and has hit 13 doubles, two triples and five home runs with 17 RBIs. He's been a plus defender this season and has one Defensive Run Saved. He's also a former Gold Glover.
Toronto also made room on the roster for Scherzer, who will be starting against Philadelphia on Wednesday.
Reliever Connor Seabold was designated for assignment Wednesday. He was originally acquired by the Blue Jays in a trade with the Detroit Tigers on May 27. Since then, he's made five appearances for Toronto and has posted an 8.10 ERA with one strikeout in 3.1 innings pitched. He had a 3.45 ERA in 11 appearances with Detroit before being traded.
Scherzer this season has a 9.64 ERA and has fanned 10 hitters in 18.2 innings pitched across five starts.
The Blue Jays are in the thick of the playoff race despite suffering their litany of injuries. Toronto entered Wednesday with a 33-35 record and 8.5 games behind the Tampa Bay Rays for first place in the American League East.
Toronto also entered Wednesday tied with the Texas Rangers for the final American League wild card spot.
The Blue Jays will conclude their three-game series against the Phillies on Wednesday and then enter the final leg of their nine-game homestand with a three-game set against the New York Yankees.
