When he takes the mound in Game 3 of the World Series on Monday night, Toronto Blue Jays right-hander Max Scherzer will make some incredible World Series history, becoming the first player ever to pitch for four teams in the World Series.
He's appeared in World Series games for the Detroit Tigers, Washington Nationals, Texas Rangers and now Jays - and he's won titles in both Washington and Texas.
A surefire Hall of Famer, Scherzer is one of the most decorated players of this generation. An 18-year veteran of the Arizona Diamondbacks, Tigers, Nationals, New York Mets, Dodgers and Blue Jays, he's gone 221-117 in the regular season with a stellar 3.22 ERA.
Now 41 years old, he has 3,489 career strikeouts and three Cy Young Awards. He's also an eight-time All-Star.
The Tigers were unfortunately swept by the San Francisco Giants, with Scherzer giving up three earned runs in 6.1 innings. He struck out eight.
He finally got his ring with the Nats as they bested the Houston Astros in seven games. He made two World Series starts, striking out 10 over 10 innings, giving up four earned runs in total. He went 1-0 as Washington won its first title ever.
The Rangers beat the D'Backs in five games, but Scherzer was only able to throw three innings in the series because of injury.
Scherzer has certainly lost some of his reliability at this point of his career, but he's 1-0 in these playoffs after beating the Seattle Mariners in the ALCS. He struck out five over 5.2 innings against Seattle, giving up just two earned runs in a crucial Game 4 win.
--Scherzer will be opposed by Tyler Glasnow, who has struck out 18 batters in these playoffs. He's also posted a 0.68 ERA.
--There's also this note, from Sarah Langs of MLB.com:
Max Scherzer vs Shohei Ohtani will be the second pair of 3+ Cy Young winner and 3+ MVP winner to face each other in a World Series (having already won 3+ each),
