We heard the Jays connected to Moncada, but he ended up going back to the Los Angeles Angels.

The Los Angeles Angels came to terms with free agent third baseman Yoan Moncada on Wednesday night. It's a one-year deal worth $4 million, according to reports.

We had heard the Toronto Blue Jays connected to Moncada for most of the offseason, but clearly it didn't materialize. Francys Romero of Beisbol FR reports that the Blue Jays, Boston Red Sox and Pittsburgh Pirates had continued to monitor Moncada's market.

It's unclear if the Blue Jays were interested in Moncada until the end, or pivoted away once they signed free agent Kazuma Okamoto, who also plays third base and adds versatility at first.

About Moncada

Now 30 years old, the Cuban infielder was once the No. 1 prospect in the game. A 10-year veteran of the Red Sox, White Sox and Angels, he's a career .252 hitter with 105 home runs.

A switch-hitter who still has some of the former prospect luster, he's battled injuries for the last several years.

Moncada played 132 games in 2019, hitting .315 with 25 homers and 79 RBIs. He then played 52 games out of a possible 60 in the COVID-shortened 2020 season, but saw his numbers regress to .225 with six home runs.

After that? He hit .263 with 14 homers in 144 games. He hit just .212 in 104 games in 2022, and then he played just 92 games in 2023. He played only 12 games in 2024 and then played 84 in 2025. He hit .234 with 12 homers and 35 RBIs.

His power is not what it used to be, but last season's output was equivalent to a 20+ homer campaign over a full season. Given the relatively low price point and the offensive potential, it's easy to see why the Jays were at least interested.

Another thing potentially at play

Just speculating here, but it seems likely that Toronto didn't want to make a move on Moncada until they ultimately learned the fates of Kyle Tucker and Bo Bichette in free agency.

Signing Okamoto also probably didn't help the chances of bringing him in. As it stands right now, the Blue Jays have Okamoto, Ernie Clement and Addison Barger who can all play third base. Moncada just might not have been necessary, despite the early interest.

What's next?

Well, it feels like the Blue Jays will just go to spring training with what they've got, which is still pretty darn good. After getting to the World Series in 2025, Toronto has spent nearly $350 million guaranteed dollars on Dylan Cease, Cody Ponce, Tyler Rogers and Okamoto.
