According to a recent report from Jon Heyman of the New York Post, the Toronto Blue Jays remain interested in trading for All-Star second baseman Ketel Marte.
Blue Jays among teams, along with Red Sox and others, interested in D-Backs superstar Ketel Marte. Talks happening but nothing hot yet.
If the Blue Jays were to acquire Marte, it would just continue an offseason of full aggression from them, as they've already signed Dylan Cease and Cody Ponce.
Furthermore, they've been linked to almost every major notable free agent or trade acquisition from Edwin Diaz to Pete Fairbanks to Kyle Tucker to Cody Bellinger to Bo Bichette.
Now 32 years old, Marte will play the entire 2026 season at 32. An 11-year veteran of the Seattle Mariners and Diamondbacks, he's a career .281 hitter with 171 home runs and 587 RBIs.
Marte has seven seasons of double-digit home run totals and two seasons of 30 or more. He's got two seasons of 90+ RBIs, is a three-time All-Star, a two-time Silver Slugger and an NLCS MVP.
He's signed through the 2030 campaign with just over $90 million remaining. There is also an $11.5 million player option for 2031. Given the price tags on premier players, he's relatively affordable.
For that reason, the Diamondbacks don't have to trade him, either, and the asking price will be steep.
It's unclear at this point what the Diamondbacks want. Do they want major league talent or do they want prospects? If it's the latter, the Blue Jays do not have a particularly well-regarded farm system, so a deal could be tough.
If it's the former, the Blue Jays have excess pitching in the form of Jose Berrios, Eric Lauer, Yariel Rodriguez and Bowden Francis.
Beyond that? The Diamondbacks could have interest in Addison Barger, but it seems difficult to imagine the Jays moving him after how he broke out in the playoffs.
Well, Marte would play second base and Andres Gimenez would play shortstop. The question is what happens at third base? Would Toronto use Ernie Clement there? Would they use Barger there, assuming they can keep him? Could they bring back Bo Bichette and use him there? Or would a Marte acquisition mean the end of his tenure north of the border?
The winter meetings will wrap up on Wednesday night into Thursday morning. There's no indication that Marte will be dealt in that window, but it's the best chance to spur immediate action.
