Toronto Blue Jays Skipper Outlines How Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Can Grow in 2026 cover image

How will not having Bo Bichette around change things for Guerrero?

Speaking on the first full day of spring training on Monday, Toronto Blue Jays skipper John Schneider addressed what life will be like for Vladimir Guerrero Jr. in the wake of Bo Bichette's departure this offseason. Bichette signed with the New York Mets in free agency after spending his entire career previously in Toronto.

Per Shi Davidi of Sportsnet:

"In my opinion, Vladdy's always been the guy in his whole time here. When he came up, it was him, Bo, Cavan, the sons of big-leaguers. When each guy departs, I think it's cool that Vlad has been the one that's here, the one we're building around. When you have relationships with people, with your friends, with your teammates, when those change, when those surroundings change, you probably see a little bit of a different version of people that are still here. And I think, if anything, probably it allows Vlad to have a little bit of a louder voice. I think it allows him to be a little bit more free, because when you get so locked in with somebody day to day for eight, nine 10 years, you kind of just have that as a norm. So I think it's an opportunity for Vlad to have a louder voice and really understand that this has been his team and it's going to continue to be his team."

About the leadership void

While Bichette's absence will be a story that looms over the team for the entire season, it should be noted that the Blue Jays do have a lot of turnover in the leadership department heading into 2026.

Max Scherzer and Chris Bassitt, both veteran voices from the clubhouse, have moved on this offseason, though we explored the idea of a possible Scherzer return earlier on Monday.

Other Jays news and notes

--A pair of former Jays players found new homes on Monday as Ty France, who won a Gold Glove in 2025, signed a deal with the San Diego Padres. Santiago Espinal, who was an All-Star for Toronto in 2022, signed a deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers.

--We're wondering if the early-season injury to Shane Bieber could result in Yariel Rodriguez ending up back in the bullpen. Remember, he was outrighted off the 40-man roster earlier this offseason.

--The Team Canada men's hockey team is the No. 1 seed at the Olympic hockey tournament. Last week, manager John Schneider said he was pulling for Canada to win the Gold Medal, something it also did in 2014 and 2010 when NHL players were present. The Canadian women are also in the semifinals on Monday.
