While the Milwaukee Brewers are working hard to get ready for the 2026 MLB season, there's a battle brewing in Spring Training right now.
No, it's not a battle for supremacy on the Brewers' pitching staff. Yet it does involve three pitchers looking to nail down a No. 5 starter's spot.
When the Brewers break camp, manager Pat Murphy wants to make sure he has a solid rotation ready to go for this season.
It's been a time of adjustment for the Brewers' pitching staff now that former ace Freddy Peralta was traded away in the offseason. All of them have had to step up their game in the hopes of filling Peralta's very big shoes.
Can the Brewers settle on a fifth starter soon? That might be a big question lingering over Murphy's head at this time.
Senior MLB Writer Eno Sarris of The Athletic has taken a deep dive in looking at some of the key Spring Training battles taking place around the majors right now.
He's focused on the Brewers and their No. 5 spot in the rotation. Harris mentions Kyle Harrison, Chad Patrick, and Logan Henderson as three pitchers looking to get that spot right now.
"There might be only one rotation spot available between Chad Patrick, Logan Henderson and Kyle Harrison when the Brewers break camp," Harris wrote. "Henderson was on my breakout list and has immense ceiling, particularly if the breaking ball is better than average.
"Patrick made my top 100 starting pitchers and has an even 4.00 ERA projection, so he seems solid," Harris continued.
"But Harrison debuted a new kick-change with the Brewers this week, and since they made Harrison the main return back in a trade that sent potential everyday player Caleb Durbin to Boston, there’s always the chance that Harrison makes the team first," Harris continued.
Harrison has been working on a curveball and slider in Spring Training, looking to perfect these two pitches and have them become an effective part of his pitching aresenal.
Harris does not pick one of the three pitchers he believes will get that No. 5 spot. He simply offers up their names and states a case for each one of them.
Murphy does have his work cut out for him. Harrison, Henderson, and Patrick all want to be in there on a regular basis. They are working hard to show Murphy that they have the right stuff to pitch in regular-season outings.
There's still time before the final 40-man roster is solidified.
So, Brewers fans, keep your eyes on these three pitchers as they look to mount a challenge and join the starting rotation.
