As the Milwaukee Brewers lack power, Jake Bauers’ career-high 26 home runs and disciplined plate approach provide the critical slugging threat necessary to anchor the lineup.
The postseason begins Tuesday, but the Milwaukee Brewers will not participate in the Wild Card round. Their postseason run will start later, giving them additional time to prepare their lineup.
When Milwaukee begins playing, Jake Bauers could become its most important offensive X-factor.
Bauers’ breakout season
The 30-year-old slugger has produced the best season of his career. Before 2026, Bauers had never appeared in more than 117 games or hit more than 12 home runs during a season.
Everything changed this year. Bauers is hitting .269/.396/.495 with an .890 OPS, 26 home runs, 83 RBIs, 11 stolen bases, 21 doubles and 90 runs scored in 139 games.
His production carries additional importance because Milwaukee’s offense does not possess significant power. The Brewers have hit 149 home runs, tying them for 28th in MLB.
Bauers leads Milwaukee with 26 home runs and ranks third on the team with 83 RBIs. The Brewers need him producing at his best if they intend to make a deep postseason run.
However, Bauers has not been as hot during September. In 16 games this month, he is hitting .222/.444/.467 with a .911 OPS, three home runs, seven RBIs, two doubles and 12 runs scored.
His patience has remained encouraging because he has drawn 18 walks while striking out 19 times. However, Bauers is only 10-for-45 during that stretch.
One swing can completely change a postseason game. Milwaukee lacks hitters capable of consistently providing that type of power, making Bauers the most likely player to alter an important matchup with one opportunity.
The Brewers need him to rediscover his best stroke before their postseason begins. Fortunately, five regular season games remain, giving Bauers time to regain his timing.
If he enters the postseason on another hot stretch, the perception of Milwaukee’s lineup changes considerably.
Bauers’ value
Bauers provides more than ability to hit the ball over the fence. His willingness to take walks prevents pitchers from neutralizing him simply by avoiding the middle of the strike zone.
That patience allows him to remain productive even when hits are not falling. It also creates additional pressure because opponents must eventually challenge him or place another runner on base.
Bauers brings versatility to his offensive approach. He can drive the ball, contribute on the bases and extend an inning through disciplined plate appearances.
His breakout also reflects persistence. Bauers entered the season without having established himself as this type of run producer, yet he turned his opportunity into a central role within the Brewers’ offense.
Milwaukee does not need him to force home runs. Bauers must trust the approach that produced his breakout season, attack strikes and remain patient when pitchers work around him. His power can give the Brewers an element their lineup otherwise lacks.
