Kevin Gausman’s departure from the Toronto Blue Jays seems inevitable, but the veteran has officially blacklisted the Milwaukee Brewers.
In a shocking turn of events, Toronto Blue Jays starting pitcher Kevin Gausman has revealed the eight teams he would block a trade to.
According to The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal, the Milwaukee Brewers are on that list.
No, this does not mean Gausman would waive his no-trade clause to come to Milwaukee; this means the Brewers are simply among a group of eight teams that Gausman has no interest in playing for.
This comes as a bit of a surprise, especially with how good pitchers have been when coming to play for the Brewers, but at the end of the day there will be other options Milwaukee can focus on to bolster their starting rotation.
Gausman shuts down Brewers' rumors
It's not like there was ever any strong indication that the 35-year-old would be heading to Milwaukee at the trade deadline, but Gausman's name has been heavily linked to teams as there's seemingly no way he stays in Toronto.
The Blue Jays are a struggling 46-56. Toronto simply isn't where they thought they'd be at this point in the season, and there's no point in holding on now that they're last place in the American League East.
For what it's worth, Gausman hasn't been that great this season. His 4-9 record speaks for itself, and he's got a 4.51 ERA that is his worst, by far, since 2019.
Gausman still holds a 1.1 WAR, so it's not like teams are interested in him for no reason. The Colorado native will likely be playing for his sixth MLB team by the end of the 2026 season, but it's been confirmed that won't be the Brewers.
The Brewers could've saved Gausman
Time and time again, struggling pitchers come to Milwaukee and have their careers turned around. Lance McCullers Jr. is already off to a hot start with the team, though there are so many pitchers this team can take a chance on.
Gausman has a tremendous chase percentage (34%), one that only 16% of the league have a better number than him.
The Blue Jays starter only walks 6.9% of the batters he faces, and he's earning a solid 27.1% whiff percentage.
There's still a lot to love about his 1.28 WHIP, even though it's up quite a bit from the 1.06 it was a year ago. Overall, his 3.4 K/BB ratio is tremendous, and this wouldn't have been the first time the Brewers took a chance on someone trending in the wrong direction. In his last nine starts, Gausman has lost six of those. After starting the year 4-3 with a 3.13 ERA, he's found a way to fall off incredibly quick.
