When a relationship between a star player and his manager works out well, then there are significant benefits that get passed down. For the Milwaukee Brewers, they can look to manager Pat Murphy and left fielder Christian Yelich as an example.
Back when Yelich signed his big-time contract with the Brewers, it put him in the spotlight. Yelich became a guy who was earning more than most of his teammates. It put him at the top of the salaries list in Milwaukee.
That's not something to sneeze at with the Brewers being one of the franchises that always looks at its bottom line.
Yelich went through some tough times between 2020-22 due to injuries. Murphy could have just not taken to a liking at his player, ignoring him. That, though, did not happen. In fact, the two have grown into having quite a bond between each other.
Murphy, who has won two straight National League Manager of the Year awards, knows that he can go to Yelich and get insights into the team.
How does Murphy feel about Yelich?
“His words count,” Murphy said in an article by The Athletic. “He is as genuine as a leader can be.”
So, how does Yelich feel about Murphy? Pretty good, as a matter of fact.
“Playing for Murph is really easy,” Yelich said. “You have to play hard, you understand what he expects out of you — it’s going to be hard but fair — and he’s not going to lie to you. If he thinks you’re playing bad, he’s going to tell you. If you’re doing a good job, he is going to tell you. Players respect that."
Murphy is known to be quite vocal with his players, telling them what he thinks about their play in the moment. While Murphy speaks out, Yelich reportedly takes a lower tone. He's pretty reserved, choosing his words wisely when he does chirp up about something going on.
Yelich offered a perspective on Murphy's managerial style, knowing that his manager is a man who speaks his mind.
“He will tell you during games," Yelich said. "He will tell you after games. He will tell you in front of the whole team. You just have to understand it’s all coming from a place of wanting to win and being the best version. Sometimes, what he does seems random or seems like he is messing around, but if you look at it deeper, it’s all for a purpose."
The Brewers are getting ready for another regular season as they take the field for Cactus League games.
Will the two compare notes during this crucial time when everyone is getting in shape for what the Brewers hope will be a successful season?
You better believe it.
