Struggling with the New York Mets after an offseason trade, the Milwaukee Brewers' former ace could return home as Pat Murphy's Brewers seek pitching reinforcements.
Having spent the first eight years of his MLB career with the Milwaukee Brewers, it seems like manager Pat Murphy and Co. are willing to bring back Freddy Peralta.
Peralta, 30, simply hasn't had a great year in New York. His time with the New York Mets has not gone according to plan, but he's far from the only reason that team is struggling as much as they are.
The Dominican Republic native has a 5-9 record with a 4.99 ERA, which is the highest it's been since 2019.
The Brewers know it likely wouldn't take much to get Peralta back, but it's crazy to think we live in a timeline where that re-union could take place after they dealt him in the offseason, knowing there's no way they could pay him what he's worth after the 2026 season.
Jeff Passan discusses Peralta coming back to Milwaukee
MLB Insider Jeff Passan of ESPN recently revealed that there have been discussions between New York and Milwaukee about a reunion taking place. The Mets thought they had a new ace coming in this past offseason, but Peralta, similar to Devin Williams when he first arrived in New York, has struggled mightily.
Passan believes there will be a big market for Peralta, even with his sub-par numbers here in 2026. The Mets are set on trading him, and somehow the Brewers find themselves in the mix for pitching reinforcements now that Brandon Woodruff and Quinn Priester are out for the year.
"One thing I did hear this week is that the Mets have been talking with the Brewers about Freddy Peralta," he said. "I don't know if that's going to happen, but it's the kind of deal where you see what they would get back from Milwaukee considering what they gave up."
Passan wonders if that's a trade David Stearns could actually pull off, and that's undoubtedly the biggest question with the trade deadline now less than a week away.
Brewers should bring Peralta back if the price is right
It's understandable why Brewers fans were over Peralta, especially with the fact that he's going to earn a massive contract, or at least was supposed to after the 2026 season. Time and time again, he fails to go deep into ballgames, and the Brewers just exposed him not too long ago in a performance that saw their former ace give up seven earned runs in 5.1 innings.
New York isn't going to be able to get much in return for Peralta, so if the Brewers can strike while the iron is hot, it's absolutely a trade they shouldn't hesitate to pull off.
