Speedster David Hamilton returns from the injured list to bolster the left side of the Milwaukee Brewers infield alongside Cooper Pratt and Joey Ortiz.
It's a tough break for infielder Braden Shewmake as he has been designated for assignment for the second time in two weeks.
The Milwaukee Brewers knew Shewmake could give them a solid bench option without David Hamilton, but everyone else is healthy and there simply isn't enough room for him on this roster.
Ahead of their series opener on Friday, July 24, the team officially reinstated David Hamilton from the 10-day Injured List and DFA'd Shewmake.
Hamilton, 28, is fresh off a rehab assignment with Triple-A Nashville. The left-handed batter was dealing with a strained left hamstring, one that occurred shortly before the All-Star break.
Hamilton returns to the Brewers
Milwaukee made sure Hamilton felt fine in five innings of work at the Triple-A level, and now he's good to go. The Texas native has been a huge addition to the Brewers this season. His numbers may not jump off the page, but he's hitting .240 and has stolen 18 bases.
Hamilton carries a 1.2 WAR, a number that is slightly above the 1.1 he had in 91 games with the Boston Red Sox a year ago. Upon his return, he'll be appearing in his 75th game of the 2026 season.
Sadly for Hamilton, Cooper Pratt is holding things down at shortstop while Joey Ortiz is on fire at third base. Those two have really come into their own during this homestand, and one has to wonder how manager Pat Murphy will balance things moving forward.
Prior to going down with an injury on July 6, Hamilton was hitting .400 in the month of July. That obviously came with quite a small sample size, but it's still worth noting in what is set to be a fiery competition down the stretch.
No room for Shewmake
The Houston Astros designated Shewmake for assignment on July 10. Two days later, he was traded to the Brewers for cash considerations.
As of July 24, Shewmake has once again been DFA'd. There's a chance he clears waivers and could give the Nashville Sounds a boost now that Jett Williams is injured, but there's no reason to believe the Brewers are going to bring Shewmake back unless injuries start to derail everything.
The fellow Texas native went 2-for-7 with the Brewers. His most notable game came on Saturday, July 18, when he went 2-for-3 with a double, RBI, stolen base, and pair of runs. Here in 2026, all three of his homers and nine of his 10 RBIs came with the Astros. Overall, he's slashing .259/.270/.424 with a .693 OPS and 0.2 WAR.
