Garrett Mitchell's big game leads Milwaukee Brewers to win opener, but Kansas City Royals take the nightcap.
Garrett Mitchell was the star of the game for the Milwaukee Brewers as they secured a 5-2 win over the Kansas City Royals in Game One of a Saturday doubleheader at Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City, Mo.
The Royals, though, found their hitting stroke and took the nightcap 8-2.
Back to Mitchell's big game. Mitchell was the spark that the Brewers needed in the opener, piling up five RBIs on a two-run double in the first inning and a three-run home run in the third inning.
His one-man hitting show ended up being just enough for the Brewers to pull out that victory. Brewers starting pitcher Chad Patrick was incredible, too, going five scoreless innings against a pretty stout Royals lineup.
Patrick's ERA is now at an incredible 0.96 early in the 2026 MLB regular season.
Mitchell had to deal with a lot of injuries last season. So, getting a chance to get back on the field and contribute to Milwaukee's goals this season means a lot to him.
Brewers manager Pat Murphy gave a lot of credit to the team's front office when it came to Mitchell.
“The front office was adamant this guy could be our best player in a lot of ways,” Murphy said, according to Robert Falkoff for MLB.com. “It’s really the front office that convinced me this was right for our team. He has done OK so far. Today was a showcase for what he can do.”
While the Brewers didn't have as much luck in beating the Royals for a sweep, concerns were toward Sal Frelick. Frelick left the game in the fourth inning after running toward first base after he hit a single.
Murphy and the Brewers' medical staff came out to check on Frelick. Eventually, Frelick was taken out of the game due to left side tightness.
The Royals were buoyed by veteran catcher Salvador Perez's home run in the sixth inning. That sixth inning changed the game in Kansas City's favor. The Royals put up six runs in the sixth and it put the game in their favor.
As far as Frelick is concerned, it's probably a wait-and-see moment if he'll be able to play in the series finale on Sunday.
Brice Turang had an RBI triple in the top of the third, cutting Kansas City's early 2-0 lead in half to 2-1. Mitchell picked up where he left off in Game One, slashing a double to right field. Turang scored and that tied things up at 2-2.
That's how things remained until Perez and Co. went to work in the sixth inning.
Pitcher Nick Mears, who used to play for the Brewers, came on in relief to pick up the victory for Kansas City. Royals reliever Eli Morgan, who was the team's 27th man for the Saturday nightcap, worked three innings for a save.
