Here's a question to ponder, Milwaukee Brewers fans: Does fireballing right-hander Jacob Misiorowski have enough to win the National League Cy Young Award in 2026?
Misiorowski has been making a name for himself around NL clubs with his arsenal of pitches. But his command of those pitches has been shaky at times.
Still, he's been determined to get things lined up properly before Opening Day this season.
Speaking of Opening Day, on Friday afternoon, Brewers manager Pat Murphy named Misiorowski as his team's Opening Day starter.
One pitch that helps set him up for the rest of his pitches happens to be a pretty nifty slider. Even Misiorowski admits that the slider plays a very important role in how he structures going after hitters.
Last season, in making his MLB debut, Misiorowski posted a 5-3 record with a 4.36 ERA. He had 87 strikeouts over 66 innings of work while posting a 1.24 WHIP. His postseason numbers, though, were outstanding.
In the National League Division Series against the Chicago Cubs and National League Championship Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers, Misiorowski worked 12 innings and recorded 16 strikeouts while posting a 1.50 ERA.
He leans on four primary pitches. Besides that slider, Misiorowski also leans into a four-seam fastball, a curveball, and a changeup.
“Everything kind of plays well off of the slider,” Misiorowski said, according to Eno Sarris of The Athletic. “I always have that to get me back in line of like, OK, this is what my delivery is doing wrong, I’m getting a little too long.”
In a predictions article focusing on some different options regarding some bold suggestions for the upcoming MLB season, Sarris pointed out that Misorowski worked on adjusting his grip of the baseball when throwing that slider.
"Usually pitchers will take their index finger off the ball with that circle, but he’s taken it a step further," Sarris wrote. "He’s pleased with the results so far, pointing out a changeup against Great Britain that had four more inches of sideways movement and four more inches of drop than he averaged last year.
"The difference, in sum, so far this spring is much smaller, and there’s no video of the changeups he referenced, but an even nastier power changeup would add yet another dimension to his arsenal," Sarris added.
With Misiorowski lining up his pitches at this time, maybe the Brewers have a Cy Young Award winner getting ready to take the mound in the regular season.
Misiorowski wouldn't mind getting some big-time hardware at season's end. Yet, while the NL Cy Young Award would be sweet, he's probably got bigger, better hardware -- like a World Series championship -- on his mind.
