Mets Put Themselves Into Race For Brewers' Freddy Peralta cover image

New York Mets looking to add an arm to its starting rotation. Could Peralta be dealt to National League East Division team?

As MLB clubs are getting ready to hit spring training pretty soon, they are looking to add a player that can make a difference to its 40-man roster.

Well, Milwaukee Brewers ace starter Freddy Peralta fits that description quite well.

The New York Mets apparently are in the hunt for a pitcher of Peralta's caliber to join them in a new race for a National League East Division championship.

According to a new article from Ken Rosenthal and Will Sammon of The Athletic, the Mets are mentioned among teams that are working the trade market at this point.

"The Mets hold some interest in the top remaining free-agent starters, including (Framber) Valdez, but their focus is on first exploring trades, league sources said," the article points out. "As of early Tuesday, no deal appeared imminent and people familiar with the discussions cautioned that things are slow.

"The Mets are interested in both rentals and pitchers with club control," Rosenthal and Sammon point out. "Thus, Tarik Skubal (Detroit Tigers), Freddy Peralta (Milwaukee Brewers), MacKenzie Gore (Washington Nationals), Edward Cabrera (Miami Marlins), Kris Bubic (Kansas City Royals) and Brady Singer (Cincinnati Reds) are all among the conceivable options.

"The Mets boast one of the top farm systems," the article from The Athletic indicates. "They are also open to dealing infielders Mark Vientos, Ronny Mauricio and Luisangel Acuña."

It's quite obvious that the Brewers would want something in return for Peralta, who is in the final year of his current contract with Milwaukee.

The ballclub would definitely love to keep Peralta around, yet the Brewers know they'd have to fork over some big bucks to retain Peralta's services.

Last season, Peralta had a big role in helping Milwaukee reach the National League Championship Series before losing to the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Brewers manager Pat Murphy sure would still love to pencil in Peralta's name either every fourth of fifth day in his pitching rotation. Peralta has just shown time and again an ability to produce quality starts for the Brewers in his time with the ballclub.

With spring training just less than a month away now, time is of the essence for the Brewers and other MLB clubs looking to retain Peralta's services.
