Andrew Fischer is a top prospect in the Milwaukee Brewers' organization and has been in the major-league camp during Spring Training.
Now, though, Fischer is going to be playing in the World Baseball Classic. Yes, he's an American, but he has family lineage connecting him to Italy. Therefore, after getting a phone call about his desire to play in the WBC, he's putting on a Team Italy jersey.
What's interesting, among other things, to note is that Team Italy will play its WBC games in Houston. Team Italy will go against Team USA in a game there in March.
Fischer is viewed as a future infield star for the Brewers. But he's got a level head when it comes to what his goals have been during Spring Training. Fischer wants to carry those goals into his regular season.
“It’s a really tough question because everyone wants to say, ‘I want to play in the big leagues, I want to win, I want to win a World Series, I want to be an MVP,’” Fischer told Brewers MLB.com beat reporter Adam McCalvy.
“But what I’m learning from being here is that the best way to go about this process is to just be where your feet are," Fischer said. "Try to win the day. As cool as it is to try to see what’s next and [listen to] the media, the best way to go about it is to learn from these guys.”
Fischer recalled a conversation, when speaking with McCalvy, that he had back in February with one of his former college baseball teammates, Roman DiGiacomo. DiGiacomo and Fischer played together for the Duke Blue Devils.
“The first thing he said was, ‘When you’re walking up to the plate, I just want you to look around and realize how grateful you are to be in the position you’re in,’” Fischer said. “It gave me a sense of gratitude and appreciation. There are people who aren’t in these spots to have a chance to fulfill their dreams.”
Fischer wants to make an impression at third base for the Brewers. He knows that if he can put together some good at-bats, while working on his defense, that his name could be remembered down the road.
Playing in a tournament like the WBC will give him more professional experience as a ballplayer. It also will give him a chance to show Team USA what he can do. Fischer will have some added incentive to perform well after not being selected by Team USA.
He'll pop on that Team Italy jersey and look to represent that country well in the WBC.
