Sal Frelick Stands Tall Despite Milwaukee Brewers Loss cover image

Sal Frelick had a triple, two walks, run scored, but Milwaukee Brewers lose to Cincinnati Reds 9-7.

The Milwaukee Brewers were looking to pick up a Cactus League win at American Family Fields on Saturday, but it didn't work out.

Sal Frelick had a triple, two walks, and a run scored, but the Brewers lost to the Cincinnati Reds 9-7.

Things started out good for Milwaukee as it took a 4-1 lead after the first inning. But Cincinnati rallied for four runs in the fourth inning and three runs in the sixth to put the Reds in the driver's seat.

Here's how things went during the Spring Training matchup between the Brewers and Reds.

In the first inning, Andrew Vaughn singled to right. William Contreras scored and Brice Turang went to third, putting the Brewers up 3-1 at this point. Blake Perkins followed with a single to right, and Turang scored to make it 4-1 Brew Crew.

In the top of the fourth, Elly De La Cruz of Cincinnati hit his fourth double of the spring to right. Matt McLain moved to third base. After Spencer Steer reached base, Blake Dunn doubled to clear the bases. That helped Cincinnati tie things up at 4-4.

Dane Myers singled to right, scoring Dunn and giving the Reds a 5-4 lead.

Then, in the bottom of the fifth, Perkins doubled to right and Turang scored to tie things up at 5-5. In the top of the sixth, Dane Myers doubled to left for Cincinnati and Sal Stewart and Héctor Rodríguez scored to make it 7-5 Reds. Will Banfield followed with a run-scoring double, putting Cincinnati up 8-5.

In the top of the seventh, the Reds' Michael Chavis hit a solo home run for a 9-6 lead over Milwaukee at that point.

The Brewers' Andrew Fischer homered in the bottom of the eighth, closing the gap to 9-7 Cincinnati.

But Milwaukee couldn't tack on any more runs, giving the Reds a Cactus League victory on Saturday.

The Brewers scored seven runs on 17 hits, but left 10 runners on base. That proved to be the downfall of Milwaukee on Saturday. An inability to get those runners home ended up pretty much being the difference between a win and a loss.

Brewers manager Pat Murphy probably was making a mental note of how his team left those runners out on base and will address it in his next team meeting. Any ballclub that ends up leaving double-digit runners on base usually finds itself on the losing end.

Milwaukee is now 4-5 in Cactus League play. The Brewers will play the Kansas City Royals on Sunday in another Cactus League matchup. First pitch is scheduled for 3:05 p.m. ET.
