Besides McCullers, left-hander Colton Gordon, and cash go to the Milwaukee Brewers from the Houston Astros in exchange for outfielder-designated hitter Jaydn Fielder.
UPDATE 3:48 p.m. July 15, 2026 - With the Milwaukee Brewers looking to deepen their pitching staff entering into the second half of the 2026 MLB season, the ballclub has acquired Houston Astros starting right-handed pitcher Lance McCullers Jr., minor-league pitcher Colton Gordon, and cash.
In exchange for McCullers and Gordon, Todd Rosiak, who covers the Brewers for the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, reported in a post on X that Milwaukee was sending outfielder-designated hitter Jaydn Fielder to the Astros.
Fielder is the son of Prince Fielder and the grandson of Cecil Fielder.
Chandler Rome, who covers the Astros for The Athletic, offered details around the Brewers acquiring McCullers. It should be noted that McCullers has dealt with injuries during his time in the major leagues.
But, when he's on his game, McCullers has a knack for getting hitters out on a regular basis.
Tough road for McCullers
It's been a tough start to this season for McCullers, who has spent time with the Astros' Triple-A ballclub in Sugar Land, Texas. The Astros had hoped McCullers would show signs of improvement. That, though, is not their issue anymore.
McCullers, if he's going to start or work in long relief, joins a Brewers staff anchored by young ace Jacob Misiorowski. There is some veteran leadership McCullers brings to the ballclub has he's won a World Series championship while with the Astros.
It also should be noted that McCullers has had a lot of support and compassion from Astros fans. His injuries, though, have mounted up. He's had to deal with Tommy John surgery and a flexor tendon repair surgeries. He missed all of the 2023 and 2024 MLB seasons for the Astros because of those injuries and surgeries.
Gordon has worked mainly with the Sugar Land Space Cowboys, but can provide some long-relief work for Brewers manager Pat Murphy and Co.
There are still elements of this trade to be finalized, but it looks like McCullers will now go to work for the Brewers and start making appearances at American Family Field.
Brewers get another arm
With McCullers reportedly coming on board, that just adds another level of pitching talent to their staff. If he can get his control around the plate improved, Milwaukee might find McCullers useful not only this season, but maybe in the 2027 MLB season, too.
Yet it's highly possible that McCullers might retire soon at some point. After all that he has been through, there's still some solid pitching he can provide.
So, it will be up to the Brewers' pitching coaches to get McCullers in game-ready shape.
Actually, with the Brewers lagging due to starting pitchers being on the Injured List, putting McCullers out there every fifth day right now might not be such a bad idea.
