The Milwaukee Brewers must bench struggling hitters for Andrew Vaughn and Luis Lara to end this series in San Diego.
The Milwaukee Brewers were arguably the better team in Game 3 of the National League Division Series, but that isn't going to get them anywhere, as they still lost the game, 4-3.
The San Diego Padres gave up 11 hits and only had six themselves in the second consecutive game of this series that had a 4-3 final score.
Neither team has scored more than four runs in the first three games, so runs have come at a premium in a series that has seen the Brewers make four defensive errors in the last two games.
Not only that, but this Brewers pitching staff once again looked incredible. Dustin May had one bad inning, but the Padres only left four runners stranded and they had just three at-bats all night with a runner in scoring position.
As for the Brewers, it was an incredibly rough night at the plate. Christian Yelich and William Contreras each had a hit with a runner in scoring position, but the team itself was only 2-for-7, and Milwaukee left two runners stranded, including a pair in the ninth inning.
Jake Bauers was 0-for-4 with four strikeouts
If there was ever a time to bench the Hank Aaron Award Finalist, it's now. Jake Bauers simply hasn't had his best stuff these last two games, and while manager Pat Murphy moved him up to second in the lineup, it's just not working.
Bauers went 2-for-3 with a hit by pitch in the series opener, but since then he's gone 0-for-8 with six strikeouts.
He's only drawn one walk in a series that sees him hitting just .182 with an abysmal .490 slugging.
Andrew Vaughn must play in Game 4. He's been as consistent as it gets all year long, and there's no reason to keep having him ride the bench, especially after Bauers was part of Cooper Pratt's huge sixth-inning error.
Luis Lara should play over Garrett Mitchell
It's amazing that Garrett Mitchell has put together a full season where he was healthy all the way through, but he's coming off a 0-for-4 night with three strikeouts.
Mitchell now has six strikeouts in 11 at-bats this series. He's always been a boom-or-bust guy at the plate, but he's also hitting just .182, and that's not going to cut it.
Luis Lara went 0-for-3 with a walk in Game 1, but he absolutely deserves another shot in the lineup at Petco Park.
