Milwaukee Brewers catcher Matt Wood enters the Arizona Fall League after a productive Double-A season.
The Arizona Fall League gives prospects another opportunity to strengthen their standing within their organizations, and Milwaukee Brewers catcher Matt Wood could be one of the more intriguing players to watch this fall.
Wood enters the Fall League after putting together a productive season with Double-A Biloxi. Despite playing alongside several notable prospects, the left-handed hitter quietly established himself as one of the more consistent offensive performers on the Shuckers’ roster.
Wood makes an impact at Double-A
Across 95 games in the Southern League, Wood posted a .398 on-base percentage while demonstrating a strong approach at the plate. He finished the season with 52 strikeouts compared to 71 walks, showing an ability to control his at-bats and avoid chasing pitches outside the strike zone.
That approach has been an important part of Wood’s offensive profile throughout his professional career. His ability to reach base while limiting strikeouts gives him a foundation to continue developing as a hitter, particularly as he faces more advanced pitching.
Power Development Adds to His Profile
Wood also made notable progress with his power during the 2026 season.
The Brewers worked with him to improve the quality of his contact, allowing him to produce better results when he squared up the baseball. That adjustment helped Wood establish a new career high with 18 home runs.
The combination of improved power and his disciplined approach gives Wood an intriguing offensive profile heading into the Fall League.
Wood's path through the Brewers' system has not been without uncertainty, however. He was eligible for the Rule 5 Draft last offseason but was not selected or added to Milwaukee's 40-man roster. That left him needing another strong season to continue making his case within the organization.
His performance at Biloxi provided exactly that opportunity.
AFL Provides Another Opportunity
Now, the Arizona Fall League represents another chance for Wood to build momentum. Strong competition in Arizona could allow him to demonstrate that his offensive improvements are sustainable while giving Milwaukee another look at his development behind the plate.
For Wood, the goal is not simply to produce another solid stretch at the plate. A productive Fall League showing could help him enter the offseason with greater organizational momentum and put him in a stronger position when Milwaukee evaluates its 40-man roster.
At 95 games with Biloxi, Wood already showed that his bat can produce at the Double-A level. His next challenge will be carrying that offensive progress into the Fall League and continuing to prove that he deserves increased consideration within the Brewers' system.
With his improved power and advanced approach at the plate, Wood has an opportunity to make himself much harder to overlook.
