Christian Yelich had a night at Fenway Park as Milwaukee Brewers top Boston Red Sox 8-6.
Things got a bit noisy on Monday night between the Milwaukee Brewers and Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park. In the end, though, the Brewers, thanks to Christian Yelich, picked up an 8-6 win.
Don't look now, Brewers fans, but Milwaukee has the best overall record in all of baseball right now.
Yelich went 3-for-4 with a double, a walk, and an RBI.
But there was some high drama between Brewers starting pitcher Brandon Woodruff and Red Sox first baseman Willson Contreras. Woodruff hit Contreras with a pitch, and Contreras didn't like it one bit. He started barking at Woodruff.
Brewers manager Pat Murphy came out and apparently was asking if Contreras was hit at all. After Murphy got back to the dugout, game cameras caught Contreras still venting toward Murphy. That led Red Sox manager Alex Cora to pop out of the dugout and come out to calm him down.
Boston jumped out to a 3-0 lead after three innings. The Brewers, though, put up a four-spot in the fourth inning. Yelich singled and David Hamilton scored, Brice Turang moved to third base, and William Contreras -- Willson's brother -- moved to second base. That made it 3-1 Red Sox.
Now, with Boston holding a 3-2 lead, Garrett Mitchell singled on a soft ground ball to Boston pitcher Danny Coulombe. Turang scored, Contreras moved to third, and Yelich went to second. The Brewers battled back to tie it up at 3-3.
With the bases still loaded, Jake Bauers walked. Contreras scored, Yelich moved to third, and Mitchell moved on up to second base.
In the bottom of the fourth, Willson Contreras hit a ground-rule double down the right-field line. Ceddanne Rafaela scored and Masataka Yoshida reached third base, putting the Red Sox up 5-4.
The Brewers tied it again in the top of the fifth on Turang's RBI groundout.
Milwaukee, though, found some offense in the top of the eighth inning. Boston challenged a tag play and the call was upheld. Garrett Mitchell singled to left, driving home Turang and Yelich. That helped the Brew Crew take an 8-5 lead. Mitchell moved to third as left fielder Roman Anthony committed a throwing error on the play.
Willson Contreras, though, added a solo homer for Boston in the bottom of the ninth. Yet the Red Sox were not able to add any more runs, giving the Brewers a big road victory.
The Brewers are now 8-2 on the season, while the Red Sox fall to 2-8.
This series picks up again on Tuesday night at historic Fenway Park.
But this series, especially after Monday night's fireworks between Contreras, Murphy, and Woodruff, just might have a little more firepower to it over the next couple of games.
The Brewers have put themselves in a really solid position record-wise so early in the season. Now, can Milwaukee stay red hot throughout April? It'll be worth watching.
