While the Milwaukee Brewers have their eyes set on coming back to the National League Championship Series, even the team's moves (or lack of them) are getting scrutinized.
Brewers fans are probably sick and tired of all the Freddy Peralta trade chatter. That's understandable since Peralta probably will walk after the last year of his current contract ends after the 2026 MLB season.
Still, Milwaukee has had chances to improve its roster. But their offseason work is getting some flack from Anthony Castrovince of MLB.com, who took a look at 10 teams and their offseason work.
"The Brewers didn’t win three straight division titles by fronting the free-agent market but by maximizing their resources," Castrovince wrote. "That includes their trade chips, as we’ve seen with the shipping off of stars Corbin Burnes, Josh Hader and Devin Williams in recent years.
"All winter, we’ve been wondering if Freddy Peralta might be next," Castrovince continued. "While the Brewers can ably afford his $8 million salary in his final season before free-agent eligibility, that low price tag also augments his trade value.
"And the Brewers have a nice stash of starters even if they do decide to move their ace," he wrote. "Does the surprising trade for lefty Angel Zerpa, who reportedly might get the chance to stretch out as a starter, further the possibility of a Peralta trade?"
Watching the Brewers' front office not really make a lot of moves to help strengthen its core up the middle (catcher, second base, shortstop, center field) must be puzzling to fans watching the team this offseason.
But the Brewers do still have a little time to get some moves made.
Yes, spring training begins in about a month. There are some free agents still out there that might make some sense for the ballclub to potentially pick up.
The Peralta albatross around the Brewers' necks will have to be solved at some point. Maybe the team waits until mid-season and makes a move.
No one really knows what they are thinking about as far as trades are concerned.
Fans do understand that the Brewers won an MLB-high 97 games last season, defeated the Chicago Cubs in the National League Division Series, then were ousted by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NLCS.
They want to see more out of Milwaukee in the coming season. It's going to be difficult to match that 97-win total in the upcoming season.
Should the Brewers make any additional moves, there's a chance that Peralta will be part of that equation.
Time will tell what Milwaukee will do. Maybe their moves down the road will get some MLB insiders to give the club a break.
