When, oh when, will the Freddy Peralta trade rumors with the Milwaukee Brewers come to an end?
Well, not anytime soon. In fact, they just might heat up all over again.
Peralta has proven to be the star starter for the Brewers' rotation while with the ballclub. His efforts have definitely earned him a big-money contract. As a free agent after the 2026 MLB season, Peralta could just walk and the ballclub gets nothing for him.
That's not a scenario that the Brewers want to consider.
Even those who closely follow MLB don't think the Brewers are simply going to watch their ace pitcher leave without something in return.
On Monday, Jan. 5, Ken Rosenthal and Will Sammon of The Athletic offered some insights into where they see some teams standing in regard to offseason moves.
"The Freddy Peralta talks are about to resume in earnest," according to Rosenthal and Sammon. "Both New York clubs, the Los Angeles Dodgers, Atlanta Braves and Boston Red Sox are among the teams showing interest. Some low-revenue clubs that can absorb Peralta’s $8 million salary are in play as well.
"The Brewers’ price, even with Peralta under club control for one more season, remains high," according to The Athletic's article. "A major-league-ready starting pitcher figures to be part of the desired return, so the team can remain a contender.
"And the calculus also includes this: Any team that acquires Peralta can recoup one prospect by making him a qualifying offer and receiving a likely Competitive Balance Round A pick in the low 30s in 2027," Rosenthal and Sammon wrote.
In case Brewers fans needed a reminder, Peralta finished 2025 with a 17-6 record and a 2.70 ERA. Peralta notched 204 strikeouts and a WHiP of 1.08. Peralta, of course, played a role in getting the Brewers all the way into the National League Championship Series.
Losing Peralta, at this point, seems a foregone conclusion. It's not something that the Brewers' fan base probably wants to see happen at all.
Brewers manager Pat Murphy knows that having Peralta as part of his rotation in 2026 adds a level of security to his team's starting rotation.
Let's see if Milwaukee can do anything, anything at all, to keep Peralta from walking.
