While Milwaukee Brewers fans are going to have to get used to not seeing Freddy Peralta take his turn in the Brewers' pitching rotation, there's a chance that the prospects picked up in return might make the Opening Day roster.
It's not definite yet, but Brewers president of baseball operations Matt Arnold and manager Pat Murphy will give them a shot.
Of course, the New York Mets sent infielder Jett Williams and right-handed pitcher Brandon Sproat to the Brewers in exchange for Peralta. For the Mets, they get a starter who can go right in and help the team challenge for a National League East Division title.
But don't discount Williams and Sproat at this point, either.
What does Williams bring to the Brewers? MLB.com reporters Adam McCalvy and Jordan Bastian broke it down in discussing the trade itself.
"Williams, 22, was a first-round Draft pick in 2022," the MLB.com story indicates. "He’s played shortstop, second base and center field in the Mets’ farm system. Last year between the Double-A and Triple-A levels, Williams hit .261/.363/.465 with 17 homers, 34 doubles, seven triples, 52 RBIs, 76 walks, 91 runs scored and 34 stolen bases."
Williams was going to come into the Mets' spring training with a chance to make the big club, too.
As for Sproat, he's already seen time at the major-league level. Sproat had four starts for the Mets in 2025, posting a 4.79 ERA with 17 strikeouts and seven walks in 20 2/3 innings of action.
"He’s a guy that we’ve liked going back to the Draft," Arnold said when talking about Sproat, who was a 2023 second-round pick for the Mets. "He’s Major League ready. He’s going to compete for a spot in our rotation, but this guy has incredible stuff. Very high-octane. Really good movement."
If Sproat can deliver for the Brewers this season, then it'll be a great asset to the pitching staff. Arnold expects starting pitcher Brandon Woodruff to be ready to go in spring training after missing time due to injuries the past couple of seasons.
Murphy has had his eye on Williams, too. It looks like these two could become fan favorites at American Family Field should they make it through spring training.
It will be worth watching how Williams and Sproat play in Cactus League games starting in February.
Murphy will have his pencil sharpened, ready to slot Williams into the everyday roster and Sproat into a spot on his pitching staff.
