John King will join the Miami Marlins on a one-year major league deal

As part of the St. Louis Cardinals' organization rebuild, many of the team's best players are no longer with the team.

Pitchers and catchers reported to the team's spring training complex in Jupiter, Fla., this week and many of the Cardinals' familiar faces on the staff from the last several years were not among them.

St. Louis dealt closer Ryan Helsley to the New York Mets at the 2025 trade deadline and moved starting pitcher Sonny Gray to the Boston Red Sox this offseason. The team also let right-handed starter Miles Mikolas walk this offseason. He signed a one-year deal with the Washington Nationals.

Another pitcher, who's been an established face in the Cardinals' bullpen over the last several years, also found a new home Wednesday.

Left-handed reliever John King signed a one-year, $1.5 million contract with the Miami Marlins.

King, who was picked in the 10th round of the 2017 MLB Draft by the Texas Rangers out of Houston, was acquired by the Cardinals in a trade with the Rangers on July 30, 2023.

St. Louis sent Texas left-handed pitcher Jordan Montgomery and right-handed pitcher Chris Stratton and netted shortstop Thomas Saggese and right-handed pitcher Tekoah Roby in return, in addition to King.

Across his two-and-a-half-year tenure with the Cardinals, King posted a 3.33 ERA and struck out 76 batters in 127 innings pitched across as many appearances.

This past year, King had a 4.66 ERA and fanned 28 hitters in 48.1 innings pitched across 51 outings.

With the Marlins, King (31-years-old) will be one of the elder statesman on the bullpen.

According to FanGraphs' roster projections for Miami, the only other Marlins reliever expected to be on the major league bullpen as old as King will be Anthony Bender. Both him and King are expected to be middle-leverage arms for the team.

This is comparable to St. Louis' current projected bullpen, which is expected to have two relievers aged 31 or older: closer Riley O'Brien (31-years-old) and middle-relief arm Ryne Stanek (34-years-old).

The new-look Cardinals will begin their regular season against the Tampa Bay Rays at 4:15 p.m. ET at Busch Stadium in St. Louis.

The Cardinals will see King and the Marlins in a three-game series from April 20-22 at loanDepot Park in Miami. King will have an opportunity to see his former team before then in a spring training game between the two teams at 1:05 p.m. ET on Feb. 23 at Roger Dean Stadium in Jupiter, Fla.
