The Cardinals 40-man roster has seen a lot of turmoil amidst their rebuild
The St. Louis Cardinals are deep into their top-to-bottom organizational rebuild.
Just this past year, the Cardinals have dealt closer Ryan Helsley, starting pitcher Sonny Gray and first baseman/catcher Willson Contreras.
St. Louis can have more deals in the work and are rumored to be looking for deals for third baseman Nolan Arenado and second baseman Brendan Donovan.
The Cardinals have gotten both minor league and major league depth in their trades this past calendar year, including major league starting pitchers Richard Fitts and Hunter Dobbins. The club also signed Dustin May to a one-year, $12.5 million contract with a $20 million mutual option for 2027.
These moves likely won't help St. Louis be competitive in 2026 but it will help the organization set up pieces to return to contention beyond.
The Cardinals' 40-man roster will likely take a much different shape before pitchers and catchers report to the team's spring training complex in Jupiter, Fla.
With that being said, here's where St. Louis' 40-man roster stands as of Dec. 28.

OVERVIEW
- Donovan, who has drawn reported interest from the Seattle Mariners, San Francisco Giants, Pittsburgh Pirates, Cleveland Guardians, Red Sox, Houston Astros and Kansas City Royals, is the only 2025 All-Star currently on the roster.
- Arenado has a no-trade clause, which he's reported to have waived to make a trade happen.
- Leahy has been a reliever since he made his major league debut in 2023. It's been reported the team wants to transition him to the starting rotation in 2026.
- Dobbins is currently recovering from a torn left ACL he suffered last year with Boston. Bloom said in a news conference he's recovering well but didn't have more information on a timeline.
