The St. Louis Cardinals, a team that has been synonymous with success since the turn of the century, have fully committed to rebuilding the roster to return to that status in the future.
On Sunday, the Cardinals made the decision to make sure one person would oversee the roster as it goes through its turnover.
St. Louis signed manager Oli Marmol to a two-year contract extension through the 2028 season with a club option for 2029.
It was a big sign of confidence from the Cardinals to Marmol that he's the man to oversee the formative years of this new roster.
According to one MLB insider, it's also a perfect match.
MLB insider Jim Bowden appeared on MLB Network Radio to offer his thoughts on Marmol's new contract and seemed confident this will be a successful union.
"This is a (general manager) and president's dream of a young, developing manager to run a young, developing team," Bowden said in his radio appearance. "He fits that mold. I've said it before and I'll say it again, I think he's a 10-year manager. And what I mean by that is I think he's one of those managers that's gonna spend a decade managing the same team — the St. Louis Cardinals. ... In three years they need to be in the postseason. They need to be contending. I think it will work and I'm a fan and I like it and I want to compliment (president of baseball operations) Chaim Bloom for not having him have to be sitting there with his job on the line this year. Unfair. Because you know what the results are gonna be."
Marmol will enter his fifth season as St. Louis' skipper this season and his 10th season on the staff of the major league franchise overall.
Marmol was originally hired as the team's first base coach ahead of the 2017 season and became the bench coach in 2019.
After the 2021 season concluded, Marmol was promoted to manager. He helped oversee the last playoff berth for the Cardinals in '22, which lost in two games in a National League Wild Card round to the Philadelphia Phillies.
In his four seasons as skipper, Marmol has a 325-323 overall record.
Marmol has been with the organization and has seen St. Louis' historical standards but has also bought into Bloom and the rest of the front office's vision for the future.
That combination bodes well for the Cardinals' future.
