The St. Louis Cardinals rebuild has led to a lot of speculation on what the team will look like in 2026.
The Cardinals have already dealt several of their best veterans, including third baseman Nolan Arenado, first baseman/catcher Willson Contreras, starting pitcher Sonny Gray and closer Ryan Helsley.
There's been continued speculation and rumors that outfielder Lars Nootbaar and second baseman Brendan Donovan could be the next two veterans shipped out of St. Louis.
In the midst of all the deals, the Cardinals have acquired a lot of minor league assets and have patched their major league roster with cheap veterans who could be flipped sometime in the future.
In a recent episode of the Cardinal Territory podcast, former St. Louis pitcher Kyle Gibson threw his hat in the ring in favor of an experienced veteran that's coming off a World Series appearance.
"Isiah Kiner-Falefa really makes sense right now for the St. Louis Cardinals," Gibson said on the Cardinal Territory podcast. "I think he adds another veteran. ... I think Kiner adds a different level of experience in the playoffs in different organizations. I think he is a guy that I would absolutely bring in at this point. He is a right-handed bat, whereas you're gonna have (Nolan Gorman), (Brendan Donovan), (JJ Wetherholt), (Alec Burleson). A lot of lefties on the infield. So you bring in Kiner, he can play any position on the field and he's a right-handed bat. And if you don't do that, then I would be in favor of adding to your blank canvas in Luken Baker and giving him the right-handed at-bats at first base and/or (designated hitter) when you need it. And if you don't do that, then you go to a buddy of mine, Rhys Hoskins, and you bring him in to be the right-handed bat on the line. I think there's a couple guys we can add here that add to the team on and off the field but don't necessarily add to the payroll."
Kiner-Falefa is an eight-season major league veteran that has played for the Texas Rangers, New York Yankees, Pittsburgh Pirates and Toronto Blue Jays.
Kiner-Falefa was claimed by the Blue Jays off waivers from the Pirates on Aug. 31. He spent the final month of the regular season and the playoffs as a key bat off the bench for Toronto, which won its first American League pennant in over three decades.
This past season, Kiner-Falefa slashed .262/.297/.334 with a .697 OPS in 138 games with Pittsburgh and the Blue Jays and hit 21 doubles, two triples and two home runs with 40 RBIs.
In the postseason, Kiner-Falefa played in 15-of-17 games.
Kiner-Falefa is also capable of playing any position on the field. This past season, he's played third base, shortstop and second base. He's also played all three outfield positions and has caught in his major league career.
