The St. Louis Cardinals offseason this year could potentially set the stage for the next several seasons.
The Cardinals are in the middle of a rebuild and multiple veterans are on the trade block.
Right-handed starting pitcher Sonny Gray and third baseman Nolan Arenado are both veterans set to earn a significant amount of money and on the trade block.
USA Today's MLB insider Bob Nightengale published a story Monday going over some of the more notable trade options this offseason, and mentioned both Gray and Arenado.
Here's what Nightengale said about Gray:
Gray is one of the finest starters on the trade block, but he’s also earning $35 million this year and has a full no-trade clause. He has a $30 million club option in 2027. The Cardinals will have to eat some of the contract if they want to move him.
Gray posted a 4.28 ERA with 201 strikeouts in 180.2 innings pitched across 32 starts in 2025.
Here's what Nightengale said about Arenado:
(Arenado) rejected deals to the Houston Astros and Los Angeles Angels a year ago. This time around, he may not say no to anybody and will be willing to waive his no-trade clause to get out of town. The Cardinals will have to pay down some of the remaining $31 million left on his contract through 2027.
Arenado scored 48 runs in 107 games and hit 18 doubles, a triple and 12 home runs with 52 RBIs. He slashed .237/.289/.377 with a .666 OPS.
The pair of multi-time All-Stars have been tied in trade rumors for months, if not years now. There's a question about what the return will be for either players. Ideally, St. Louis will get a return that will help set the organization up for the future.
