The Cardinals minor leagues could bear a lot of fruit for the organization in the near future

The St. Louis Cardinals are well into their organizational rebuild.

In the last calendar year, the Cardinals have dealt closer Ryan Helsley, starting pitcher Sonny Gray and first baseman/catcher Willson Contreras.

St. Louis could deal more starting-caliber players before the end of the offseason and that could open the door for several minor leaguers to make an impact on the team in 2026.

The Cardinals' farm system has its own healthy amount of expectations.

In a recent episode of the Baseball America podcast, hosted by Geoff Pontes and J.J. Cooper, the publication named St. Louis as the organization with the most-improved farm system.

"I do think it's the Cardinals (with the most improved farm system)," Pontes said on the podcast. "I think we just look year-over-year from where they were to where they are now, the breakout of Rainiel Rodriguez, the breakout of Josh Baez. And then, drafting Liam Doyle, drafting Tanner Franklin, really good season from Ixan Henderson. They got two of the better catchers in the minors in their top 10, they acquired Brandon Clarke. So, even when they had sort of down seasons from Quinn Matthews or an injury from Tekoah Roby, who's now out for a little bit, or injuries to guys like Cooper Hjerpe, who was a first-rounder a few years ago, they were able to acquire enough talent through all these different acquisition windows, even a Rule 5 (draft) pick. But they have a lot of different types of prospects in the system. They have a lot of pitching depth and they have a lot of variety within that pitching depth. And you should be at least somewhat intrigued by what Chaim Bloom can do in terms of building out the development structure."

The Cardinals currently have four top 100 prospects, according to MLB Pipeline. Two of those prospects include players mentioned by Pontes: catcher Rainiel Rodriguez (No. 55 top 100) and starting pitcher Liam Doyle (No. 36).

A name not mentioned by Pontes is infielder J.J. Wetherholt, who will likely earn his way into a starting role with the Cardinals next season.

Wetherholt is ranked as the No. 5 prospect in baseball according to MLB Pipeline. He was the seventh overall pick in the 2024 MLB Draft out of West Virginia.

Wetherholt slashed .306/.421/.510 with a .931 OPS in 109 games across Double-A and Triple-A. He hit 28 doubles, two triples and 17 home runs with 59 RBIs and stole 23 bases in 26 attempts.
