A scoreless stalemate exploded into a nine-run thriller as the Arizona Diamondbacks edged past the Kansas City Royals in a wild extra-innings shootout.
Despite neither team scoring in the first nine innings, there were nine combined runs in the 10th inning alone.
The Arizona Diamondbacks came out on top, 5-4, as the Kansas City Royals' late rally wasn't enough to get the job done.
The D-backs scored five runs in the top of the 10th in what can only be described as one of, if not the craziest games of the year.
These teams were tied 0-0 through nine innings, and then all of a sudden everyone came to life in the 10th.
Arizona improves to 77-68 on Labor Day as their hopes of making the playoffs continue to grow with wins like these.
Everything that went down in the 10th inning
One of the biggest numbers that stands out is the fact that the D-backs were 4-for-6 with runners in scoring position while the Royals were just 3-for-13.
Ildemaro Vargas bunted for a base hit in the top of the 10th, and that got the inning going for Arizona.
Two pitches later, Lars Nootbaar hit a sacrifice fly that scored Corbin Carroll.
A fly out and single would follow, and then chaos ensued. Geraldo Perdomo singled to right field on a base hit that would see a pair of runs score due to an error by John Rave.
Craig Kimbrel had to wear this one as he pitched the entire 10th. After intentionally walking Ketel Marte, Gabriel Moreno and Nolan Arenado each hit singles that would score a run.
Kimbrel entered the game with the score 0-0, and suddenly, 25 pitches later, his team trailed 5-0.
Leadoff batter Carter Jensen doubled in a run for the Royals, and then Salvador Perez cleared the bases with one of his own.
Arizona led 5-4 with a runner on second with one out. Tyler Tolbert would pinch-run for Perez, and he advanced to third on a fly out to center.
Ultimately, he would be left stranded as Dennis Santana recorded the game-winning strikeout for his third save of the season.
Justin Martinez was the fifth pitcher the D-backs used in the game, and he was the one to pick up the win, now improving to 2-0 this season.
Despite striking out 12 times in this game, the D-backs pitching staff bailed out their horrific offensive showing through the first nine innings, and all it took was one rough outing from Kimbrel to gift the Diamondbacks their 77th win of the season.
