Arizona Diamondbacks starting pitcher Zac Gallen applauded teammates for series win over Philadelphia Phillies.
While Zac Gallen didn't pick up the win on Sunday for the Arizona Diamondbacks, seeing his teammates come through left him with a good feeling.
Gallen worked five innings before a series of relievers came in as the Diamondbacks posted a 4-3 win over the Philadelphia Phillies on Sunday at Citizens Bank Park.
With the victory, the D-backs also earned a series win. That's a big deal when it comes against one of the best teams in the National League, one with Kyle Schwarber and Bryce Harper in the middle of that lineup.
"Good team win, good series win," Gallen said, according to MLB.com. "We're just trying to keep the momentum up. I think as a team, we believe in the talent that's in here.
"Obviously we know the guys that are on the IL that are working hard to come back," Gallen added. "I think I said at the beginning of the year that the guys here are going to make the guys coming back, make it hard on them to earn their spot back. I think guys are playing free and not playing scared."
As he watched his players from the dugout this weekend, Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo admired their effort.
"We're very gritty, and we like these kinds of games," Lovullo said. "We play a lot of one-run games. So I want these guys to continue to go out play good baseball, win series, and just see where that takes us."
Merrill Kelly Rejoins Diamondbacks
Before the team headed out of their clubhouse, a friendly face reappeared. Starting pitcher Merrill Kelly is back with the ballclub.
He's slated to start Monday's game against the Baltimore Orioles at Oriole Park at Camden Yards.
When asked about taking a little more time to get back to the club, Kelly was understandable about the club's reasoning.
"I just felt like I was ready," Kelly said, according to MLB.com. "But obviously, it's not my decision. You know, it's up to the organization. Obviously, I wanted to be back with the team, help the team. I felt like I was healthy, but at the end of the day, one more is not going to make or break anything."
With Kelly coming back into the starting rotation, another pitcher will have to leave it. Lovullo said that he has not made any decisions on that move.
"We wanted to get him here, throw his bullpen in front of [pitching coach Brian Kaplan] and the rest of the pitching coaches," Lovullo said on Sunday. "We felt that that was very important. So we're grateful that he flew in yesterday."
Getting Kelly back is definitely good news for the D-backs at this time.
