
Ildemaro Vargas didn't wait around on Friday, getting a hit for the Arizona Diamondbacks to extend his streak.
Ildemaro Vargas cannot be shut down right now by any MLB pitcher. The Arizona Diamondbacks' second baseman singled in the top of the first inning against the Chicago Cubs, extending his hit streak.
How many games is it now for Vargas? Make it 27 straight games dating back to last season. In fact, Vargas gives him the longest hit streak among all-time MLB players from Venezuela.
If that wasn't enough, Vargas was 4-for-4 as the Diamondbacks and Cubs were playing in the eighth inning on Friday afternoon at Wrigley Field. Vargas also has hit safely in all four Diamondbacks games this season.
USA Today MLB columnist Bob Nightengale posted an update on Vargas' hit streak on Friday afternoon.
Vargas is simply setting the day (and night) on fire with his plate discipline.
Vargas has a .404 batting average, too. It's an incredible start to the season for Vargas, one that will not be forgotten soon by Diamondbacks players, front office and, of course, fans.
If you want a measure of just how well Vargas is hitting at the plate, beyond the hit streak, then take a look at these numbers from Baseball Savant. Among 2026 MLB Percentile Rankings, Vargas, in value, has great numbers in Batting Run Value, Baserunning Run Value, and Fielding Run Value.
Then, in batting, Vargas ranks great in xwOBA, xBA, xSLG, LA Sweet Spot, Whiff %, and K %. Per Vargas' hit spray chart, when he hits singles, they are pretty much back up the middle or toward right-center field.
Baseball SavantHis doubles and triples, though, have consistently been toward right field. And, what about home runs? Vargas has pulled four of his six home runs to left field.
Watching Vargas step into the batter's box has become must-see TV for Diamondbacks fans. Looking back at his batting averages from the 2024 and 2025 MLB seasons, Vargas hit .246 and .270, respectively.
Entering Friday's game at the "friendly confines" of Wrigley Field, Vargas had a .391 batting average. Vargas also has a .700 slugging percentage.
Vargas led off the ninth inning with the Diamondbacks down 6-5 and coaxed a walk, making it five times on base for him on Friday.
So, Vargas keeps making an impression whether getting a hit or reaching base.
It's become one of the great stories in baseball this season, and it's just going to keep on getting better and better.
