Corbin Carroll's bases-loaded double, Nelson's outstanding work help Arizona Diamondbacks top New York Mets 7-2.
Corbin Carroll is hot, Ryne Nelson looked good, and the Arizona Diamondbacks were able to get past the New York Mets 7-2 on Wednesday at Citi Field.
Carroll connected on a two-run double off Mets starter David Peterson in the top of the second inning, helping the Diamondbacks take a 4-0 lead at that point. Carroll finished the day by going 3-for-5 at the plate with two RBIs and a run scored.
Jose Fernandez was 2-for-4 with two runs scored, and Ildemaro Vargas posted a 3-for-4 day at the plate with two runs scored.
What did Nelson do for Arizona? He went 5 2/3 innings, giving up five hits, one earned run, didn't walk a batter, and struck out five. Nelson evened out his season record at 1-1 by picking up the victory. Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo used three relievers over the rest of Wednesday's game to keep Mets hitter off-stride.
Peterson didn't have his best day on the mound for the Mets. He worked five innings, giving up five runs (all earned), walked two, and struck out six. Sean Manaea worked the final four innings for New York, giving up five hits, two earned runs, walking two, and striking out two.
Gabriel Moreno's sacrifice fly in the first inning brought Carroll home for a 1-0 Diamondbacks lead. Carroll's two-run double, along with Ketel Marte's RBI single, put Arizona up 4-0 in the second inning.
The Mets put up single runs in the sixth and eighth innings, but that wasn't enough as Arizona picked up a road victory.
With the win, the Diamondbacks are now 6-6 overall and in third place in the National League West Division. The Mets fall to 7-5 and sit in third place in the NL East after Wednesday's action.
Carroll added a triple in the top of the seventh inning, continuing to show the MLB world that he means business this season.
Nelson found his rhythm on Wednesday, showing a better pace on the mound after a couple of rough starts.
"I think I made some adjustments from the last few games," Nelson said after the game, according to MLB.com. "I was just trying to be more over the plate, be more ahead in counts and just pitch the way that I feel like I know I can. I think that today was a good step in the right direction."
Nelson really leaned in on using his four-seam fastball for much of the game. He threw 65 of them while also tossing in 14 sliders among his 86-pitch effort.
The weather wasn't always too kind for the Diamondbacks as chilly temperatures were more the norm on this trip to the Big Apple.
"Cold day like today, it can be kind of tough to feel the spin [for breaking pitches]," Nelson said. "But that just allows me to use the fastball more, which I want to do anyway and jump ahead of guys, pound the zone with it."
The Diamondbacks probably hope that Nelson keeps this vibe going into his next couple of starts this season.
Arizona will close out their series against the Mets with a Thursday afternoon matchup.
