Corbin Carroll hammers grand slam as Arizona Diamondbacks slug Los Angeles Angels 8-1.

It's been a couple of weeks since the Atlanta Diamondbacks reached double digits in hits against opponents. Thankfully, the Los Angeles Angels were playing against them and did not put up much of a fight.

Corbin Carroll hit a grand-slam home run in the second inning at the Diamondbacks went on to beat the Angels 8-1 at Chase Field in Downtown Phoenix. A five-run second inning set the table for Arizona to get the win.

The victory, in front of an afternoon crowd looking to get out of the Arizona heat, gives Arizona a 38-36 record and keeps the Diamondbacks in third place in the National League West Division.

Eduardo Rodriguez Looked Good

Eduardo Rodriguez worked seven innings for the Diamondbacks, putting his record at 6-2. He allowed six hits, one earned run, walked three, struck out five, and gave up a home run.

Sam Aldegheri absorbed the loss for Los Angeles, evening his season record at 2-2. In six innings of work, Aldegheri allowed six hits, six earned runs, three walks, one strikeout and he, too, gave up a home run.

The Angels were 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position and left five total runners on base. Arizona had chances to really add to their run output, going 3-for-11 with runners in scoring position and seven total runners left on base.

Zach Neto led off the game with a solo home run, giving the Angels an early 1-0 lead. Mike Trout followed with a single, but an Oswald Perazo double play put the wraps on any challenge that the Angels were looking to make early.

In that five-run second, Ildemaro Vargas led off with a walk. With two outs, the Angels thought they'd probably be out of the inning soon enough. That didn't happen. Tommy Troy's first triple this season scored Vargas and this afternoon contest was tied up at 1-1.

Then, Aldegheri hit Ketel Marte with a pitch and Geraldo Perdomo walked. Remember, all of this is happening with two outs. That set the stage for Carroll to smoke his 13th home run this season over the right-field wall. Diamondbacks fans present at Chase Field cheered loudly as Carroll rounded the bases.

Grand Slam Pleased Lovullo

With that slam, Arizona took over the game at 5-1.

Getting a hit like the one that Carroll delivered is something that Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo has been looking for recently. Arizona's offense has been a bit stagnant, so Carroll delivered a wake-up call.

"That was it," Lovullo said, according to MLB.com. "I think the dugout felt an immediate sigh of relief, and it took the air out of some very tense moments and games over the past 12 to 14 days, and that's what we want guys to do. That was a key moment for this ball club. And more to come, I'm sure."

In the bottom of the third inning, Jordan Lawlar doubled to left. Troy singled to center, bringing home Lawlar and bumping up the Diamondbacks' advantage to 6-1. Marte's double in the bottom of the fifth scored Vargas and Lawlar. That made it 8-1 Arizona and, well, that was a wrap.

The Diamondbacks will get a day off on Thursday before opening a three-game series at Chase Field against the Minnesota Twins. First pitch on Friday night is at 6:45 p.m. MT.
