Corbin Carroll's eighth-inning grand slam propels Arizona Diamondbacks past Toronto Blue Jays.
Corbin Carroll will not have to buy his drinks on Saturday night.
Carroll sent a Jeff Hoffman pitch deep into the night for a grand slam home run, the fourth of his career, as the Arizona Diamondbacks defeated the Toronto Blue Jays 6-2 at Chase Field.
Hoffman came on in the eighth inning and gave up base hits, then walked Ketel Marte to load the bases.
Carroll then put on his make-believe Superman cape and gave the Diamondbacks fans something to cheer about in the Valley of the Sun.
Diamondbacks starting pitcher Zac Gallen was pitching lights out for his team. At the same time, Blue Jays starter Max Scherzer wasn't too bad himself.
Gallen pitched 5 2/3 innings for Arizona, giving up nine hits, two runs (both earned), didn't allow a walk, and struck out three. Scherzer went six innings for the Blue Jays, giving up five hits, two runs (both earned), walked one, and struck out one.
Hoffman took the loss in relief, while Arizona reliever Juan Morillo got the win in relief of Gallen. Morillo's record this season evened up at 1-1 with the victory.
A Jesús Sánchez RBI single in the top of the first inning gave the Blue Jays an early 1-0 lead. Toronto even had more traffic on the basepaths, but Gallen managed to get out of the early jam.
Carroll walked in the bottom of the first, stole second, and scored on Geraldo Perdomo's RBI single. That tied things up at 1-1.
Alek Thomas' RBI double put the Diamondbacks on top at 2-1 in the fifth inning.
The Blue Jays tied things up again at 2-2 in the sixth on Kazuma Okamoto's RBI single that scored Eloy Jiménez.
Arizona left nine runners on base, going 2-for-9 with runners in scoring position. As for the Blue Jays, they left two runners on base and went 3-for-5 with runners in scoring position.
Saturday night's game wasn't an offensive showcase, but Carroll's big blast was enough to send the Diamondbacks faithful home very happy.
The Diamondbacks and Blue Jays will wrap up their three-game series on Sunday at Chase Field. With Saturday night's win, the D-backs secured a series victory. They'll go for the sweep on Sunday. The Diamondbacks have now won four consecutive series.
Arizona is now 13-8 on the season, sitting in third place in the National League West Division. The Blue Jays fall to 7-13 overall, landing them in fifth place in the American League East Division.
Can the Diamondbacks and manager Torey Lovullo pull the right strings to send Toronto out of the valley losers of three straight? That's going to be tantamount on the team's mind on Sunday afternoon.
