Coming off big Sunday win at Chase Field, Arizona Diamondbacks get ready for series against New York Mets.
If a team was looking for a pick-me-up before heading out on a big road series, then the Arizona Diamondbacks sure got one.
Sunday's 10th-inning rally, thanks to Ketel Marte, probably put Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo and his players in a good mood. Arizona wrapped up a 5-2 homestand by splitting a four-game series against the Atlanta Braves.
Before the Braves arrived in the Valley of the Sun, the Diamondbacks swept a three-game series against the Detroit Tigers. They even were able to get the upper hand against Tigers ace Tarik Skubal.
But, the good times at Chase Field have to be put in the rear-view mirror.
The Diamondbacks open a three-game series on Tuesday at Citi Field against the New York Mets. Thank goodness right fielder Corbin Carroll is on a tear to begin the 2026 MLB regular season.
Carroll has a slash line of .313/.656/1.066 with two home runs, two triples, one double, and nine RBIs.
Left fielder Jordan Lawlar hasn't been too shabby, either. Lawlar has a slash line of .333/.556/.956, going 6-for-18 in early-season action.
“We got pitching-heavy in those wins, and that carried us,” Lovullo said on Sunday. “We hand it off to one another. When it starts to fire on all cylinders, that's when we're going to really take off.”
Michael Soroka has been the star of the Diamondbacks' pitching rotation. He's 2-0 with an 0.90 ERA. Soroka has walked just four batters while striking out 13.
Tuesday's game against the Mets will have a first pitch set for 3:10 p.m. ET (1:10 p.m. MT). Zac Gallen is listed as the probable starter for the Diamondbacks against the Mets' Freddy Peralta, who was the ace of the Milwaukee Brewers' pitching staff when he was there.
In looking at the state of the Diamondbacks' pitching staff after a 5-5 start to the season, Soroka, Gallen, Ryne Nelson, Eduardo Rodriguez, and Brandon Pfaadt have a team 3.29 ERA. It's the fifth-best team ERA in the National League, according to MLB.com.
While the starting pitching looks pretty elite, that isn't the case for the Diamondbacks bullpen at all. The Arizona relievers combined have a 6.50 ERA. That puts it at the bottom of the National League and at No. 29 in MLB.
In order for the Diamondbacks to even be near challenging the Los Angeles Dodgers for supremacy in the NL West Division, that has to get better.
One thing that also has to improve is the patience that the Diamondbacks hitters show at the plate. They're not mounting up many walks and working the counts deep when facing opposing pitchers.
The Mets are no slouch. They've got a ton of quality players on their roster. After 10 games in the young 2026 MLB season, the Mets are 6-4.
After Tuesday's series opener, the Diamondbacks will have two more games against the Mets before shifting over to Philadelphia. There, Arizona will have a three-game weekend series against the Philadelphia Phillies.
