Overcoming a right shoulder setback, Arizona Diamondbacks ace Corbin Burnes targets a late-season comeback.

Arizona Diamondbacks ace Corbin Burnes appeared to be on track to return around the All-Star break before another setback dramatically changed his recovery timeline.

While rehabbing from Tommy John surgery, Burnes suffered a right shoulder injury that immediately halted his throwing program and cast significant doubt over the remainder of his 2026 season.

At the time, there was legitimate concern that the right-hander could miss the rest of the year. However, the latest update from Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo offers renewed optimism that Burnes could still contribute this season.

Speaking Friday on Arizona Sports’ Burns & Gambo Show, Lovullo shared the organization’s latest outlook regarding Burnes’ rehabilitation.

Earlier that same day, Lovullo appeared on MLB Network Radio and estimated that Burnes could return sometime between late August and early September.

His comments on the Burns & Gambo Show suggested that the latter portion of that timeline is now viewed as the more realistic objective.

Lovullo explained that he recently spent about an hour speaking with Burnes before the team departed on its latest road trip.

During that conversation, Burnes expressed his determination to return during the first week of September. Lovullo acknowledged the pitcher’s goal while emphasizing that considerable work still remains before that can become a reality.

“I had a nice hour-long visit with him this past weekend before he hit the road on this long road trip,” Lovullo said.

“And he said, ‘Torey, I’m telling you, I wanna be there the first week of September.’ So what does that mean? I don’t know. He’s got a lot of work between now and then.”

The manager also provided an encouraging update on Burnes’ current rehabilitation.

According to Lovullo, the veteran right-hander has progressed to throwing from a distance of 90 feet and is expected to advance to flat-ground sessions as the next step in his recovery program.

Burnes’ effort

Lovullo praised Burnes for the effort he has put into the rehabilitation process and credited both the pitcher and Arizona’s medical staff for the progress that has been made.

“I think Corbin is doing a really nice job of working his butt off with our medical team,” Lovullo added.

Burnes has consistently demonstrated a desire to return to competition as quickly as possible throughout his rehabilitation.

That aggressive mindset has fueled speculation that pushing too quickly may have contributed to the right shoulder setback that interrupted his recovery earlier this year.

Lovullo made it clear that the Diamondbacks’ medical staff will ultimately control every stage of Burnes’ progression. They carefully balance the player’s eagerness with the caution required after such a significant procedure.

Arizona could certainly benefit from his return.

The Diamondbacks’ rotation has been stretched by injuries, forcing the team to rely on rookies Mitch Bratt and Kohl Drake.

Arizona continues to wait for Burnes, Michael Soroka, Ryne Nelson, and Zac Gallen to return. Like Burnes, Soroka has been patient in his own recovery process.

Before his injury ended last season, Burnes was performing at an elite level.

In 2025, he posted a 2.66 ERA in 64.1 innings across 11 starts. He struck out 63 batters against 26 walks before the right elbow injury abruptly halted what had been an outstanding campaign.

Burnes’ value

Burnes has built a reputation as one of MLB’s most respected competitors because of his relentless work ethic and commitment to excellence.

He approaches every outing with meticulous preparation and has consistently demonstrated the discipline required to succeed at the highest level.

His leadership extends beyond his own performances as younger pitchers often benefit from watching his routines, professionalism, and attention to detail.

Even while working through a lengthy rehabilitation process, Burnes has remained focused on supporting his teammates and doing everything possible to return in peak condition.

His determination throughout recovery reflects the same mindset that helped establish him among MLB’s premier starting pitchers.

Players with his combination of experience, resilience, and competitive drive are difficult to replace.

His eventual return is especially important for a Diamondbacks team still battling for postseason positioning.

If Burnes can complete his recovery successfully, Arizona would be welcoming back not only one of its most talented pitchers but also one of its most influential clubhouse leaders.
