It looked like the Arizona Diamondbacks ate their Wheaties before Monday night's game against the San Francisco Giants at Chase Field in Downtown Phoenix. 

Once Nolan Arenado cleaned off the bases with a grand slam in the first inning, that started a big-time night at the plate. The Diamondbacks ended up walloping the Giants 12-2, a result that got the team back to the .500 mark at 23-23.

Zac Gallen looked pretty sharp on Monday night, going six innings and capturing his second win this season. Gallen is now 2-4 overall. He allowed four hits, two earned runs, walked one, and struck out five. Ryan Thompson, Brandyn Garcia, and Jonathan Loaisiga worked one inning apiece and kept the Giants' offense shut down.

Giants starter Robbie Ray didn't have a good night, falling to 3-6 this season. In 4 1/3 innings, Ray gave up 11 hits, 10 runs (nine earned), walked two, and struck out one. Ray also gave up two home runs before Giants manager Tony Vitello came out to pull his starter.

As if that wasn't enough runs on Monday night, the Diamondbacks finished up going 4-for-13 with runners in scoring position. Arizona left eight runners on base in total.

Arenado's big blast over the left-field wall was his seventh homer this season. That staked the Diamondbacks to that early 4-0 lead and, in the end, it proved to be enough runs. But they weren't done yet.

San Francisco's Willy Adames slammed a solo home run, his fourth homer this season, to cut the D-backs' lead to 4-1. Arizona got that run back in the bottom of the second on Ketel Marte's sacrifice fly that brought Ryan Waldschmidt home for a 5-1 lead. 

The Giants answered right back, though, in the top of the third as Luis Arraez's sacrifice fly got San Francisco within 5-2. That, though, was the final run the Giants scored all night long.

Tim Tawa's two-run single in the bottom of the third scored Ildemaro Vargas and Gabriel Moreno, giving the Diamondbacks a 7-2 advantage. Moreno hit his second home run this season, a two-run blast that scored Vargas ahead of him. The dinger put Arizona up 9-2.

Waldschmidt then doubled to left, bringing home Jose Fernandez and that put the D-backs in double digits for runs at 10-2. Marte's single that ended up near Giants first baseman Rafael Devers scored Waldschmidt, giving Arizona an 11-2 lead.

Finally, an error on Giants shortstop Adames allowed Marte to score and it was 12-2 Diamondbacks to wrap up the bottom of the fifth inning.

The Giants fall to 20-28 with the loss, putting them in fourth place in the National League West Division. The Diamondbacks are just ahead of the Giants in third place.

Monday night's victory really can be a jumpstart for the Diamondbacks going forward. If they can take two of three from the Giants in this three-game series, then they can look at their overall record and feel pretty good about themselves.

This win probably put a big smile on Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo's face as well.

This three-game series continues on Tuesday night before wrapping up with a Wednesday afternoon matinee at Chase Field.
