Pittsburgh Pirates starter Mitch Keller did solid job as Arizona Diamondbacks lose series at home.

Corbin Carroll homered on Thursday afternoon at Chase Field for the Arizona Diamondbacks, but it wasn't nearly enough as the Pittsburgh Pirates secured a series win and a 4-2 victory.

Carroll's homer was his fifth this season and came in the bottom of the third inning to put the Diamondbacks up 2-1 at that point.

But the Pirates were able to get to Diamondbacks starter Zac Gallen, who absorbed the loss on Thursday. With the defeat, Arizona falls two games under .500 at 17-19 and remains in third place in the National League West Division. The Pirates picked up the series win, too.

Gallen worked six innings, giving up six hits, four earned runs, walked two, and struck out five. Yet Gallen gave up two home runs to Pirates hitters, which helped Pittsburgh bump up its season record to 21-17. The Pirates are also in third place, but in the National League East Division.

Gregory Soto came on for the Pirates in the ninth inning and secured his third save this season.

With one out in the top of the first inning, Pittsburgh's Brandon Lowe connected off Gallen for a solo home run. It was Lowe's 10th home run this season and put the Pirates up 1-0 early.

The Diamondbacks answered back in the home half of the first as Adrian Del Castillo's RBI single brought Geraldo Perdomo home and tied things up at 1-1.

Arizona had a prime scoring opportunity with runners at first and third with one out in the bottom of the second inning. But Alek Thomas grounded into a double play to snuff out that threat.

Carroll's homer in the bottom of the third gave the Diamondbacks a 2-1 lead.

Then, in the top of the fifth inning, Pittsburgh's Ryan O'Hearn singled to right and Lowe scored to tie things up at 2-2 at that point. With runners at first and third with two outs, Spencer Horwitz singled to right field. Bryan Reynolds scored and the Pirates went up 3-2.

Joey Bart's solo home run in the top of the sixth, his second homer this season, gave Pittsburgh a two-run cushion at that moment. The Pirates managed to keep their 4-2 lead all the way through to the game's final pitch.

Arizona, though, had another scoring opportunity in the bottom of the eighth. With runners at first and second base with two outs, Nolan Arenado struck out and the Diamondbacks were on their way to another loss this season.

The D-backs went 2-for-5 with runners in scoring position and left seven runners on base on Thursday afternoon. As for the Pirates, they were 2-for-7 with runners in scoring position and ended up leaving seven runners on base.

Arizona is in the midst of a nine-games-in-nine-days run. With the Pirates series now in the rear-view mirror, the New York Mets will be coming to the Valley of the Sun starting on Friday. They'll be in town at Chase Field for a three-game weekend series.
